Sedimentation that utilizes lamella is a compact separation technique. The use of lamella in a smaller sedimentation tank reduces effluent turbidity as well as a larger sedimentation tank with no lamella. This is because the parallel plates are installed at a sixty-degree angle, causing flocs to settle out of the water being treated at a significantly lower vertical height. The purpose of the plate-settler spacing research team is to quantitatively and qualitatively explain the effects of various parameters of the parallel plates on sedimentation. The focus of the Fall 2008 research is on the spacing between these plates.

The current research being done regarding the effects of inter-lamella spacing on sedimentation is an extension of experiments completed during summer 2008: Summer 2008
