In response to the problems observed in Honduras involving grit clogging the flocculator, the GRIT team has gone through several iterations of grit removal design using plate settlers before flocculation. The team invented and explored options for each design, and improved upon them to optimize their feasibility before comparing them. In the end, the team has decided that the iteration called the Channel GRU is the best of the three designs that were explored. It drastically decreases the plant’s plan view area by reducing the entrance tank to nothing but a trash rack, elegantly ensures flow distribution through creative plate-to-floor geometry, and effectively incorporates chemical dosing and rapid mix after the grit removal plate settlers. This design is currently being considered for construction in a 4 L/s plant in Honduras. |
