Alexander Duncan's Individual Contribution Page

Semester Contributions

Currently I am working with the Plate Settler Spacing team to test tube settler robustness. I help run experiments and check on them daily for troubleshooting. I have also helped collect and analyze data for graphical analysis, as well as started work on an attempt to develop a physical model for velocity gradients within the settler with respect to the floc roll-up phenomenon. This has involved doing a great deal of preliminary analysis with Mathcad.

This semester (Spring '10) I helped to derive the relevant equations that helped us to design our first round of experiments on floc rollup. I also helped set up, carry out, and analyze the results of these experiments. In the second round of experiments, I helped determine how to isolate the effects of velocity gradients in the settler by fixing other parameters of the system, (e.g. capture velocity, upflow velocity, pi ratio) which our team figured out in our MathCAD files. I also performed a literature search on lamella/ tube settler spacing guidelines.
