"Alexandra Green"'s Individual Contribution Page

Fall 2013 Contributions

Alexandra is an MEng candidate in the Environmental and Water Resource Systems Engineering track.  She graduated from Princeton in 2013 with a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Engineering.

During the fall, Alexandra joined the Low Flow Stacked Rapid Sand Filter team and the 10 cm filter sub-team.  She and her teammate, Jeanette, tested the backwash initiator to see if it can initiate backwash at a constant head of 1.4 meters.  They found that the backwash initiator is actually more of a backwash indicator, as they could not rotate it and initiate backwash unless the sand bed was already fluidized.   They also constructed a new sand drain for the current 10 cm test filter.

Spring 2014 Contributions

In the spring, Alexandra began working on a new sub team focused on improving the ease of operation of sedimentation tank controls and investigating the use of a floc probe.  To date, the team has developed two methods to help operators remove the pipe stubs more easily.  The first is a lever and the second is a slide hammer.  They are also working on a way to remove launder caps and also investigating alternatives to PVC caps.  Once the team gets feedback from the San Nicholas plant, they will begin work on the floc probe!
