Alex called this the PECF (Rockefeller basement computer lab) in an 11/4/16 email, following some hard drive failures.

Don't forget about the Linux Lab and the IT services they provide including their website - http://computing.physics.cornell.edu/.

Our guess is that JohnM does not have knowledge of all the services they have setup.
To do: ID their services and provide a list of recommendations from PhysIT.
