Design Meeting Minutes

Summer 2009 Minutes

6/26/09

Accomplishments
  • Fixed pipe frame
  • Fixed launders
  • Working on making the walls of the inlet chimneys the same thickness as the inlet channel walls. This will allow for much easier construction.
  • Worked on our teach in
  • Developed a new protocol for testing and committing files to the source forge, as well as a new protocol for committing new files to the Design Tool
  • Worked on developing a protocol for users to submit any bugs they find with the Design Tool
  • Moved the floc tank edits to the most recent design file so that they took effect
Issues
  • Need to better develop bug report on source forge
  • Need to clean up the source forge
Goals for upcoming week
  • Work on mid term wiki report
  • Use the port area algorithm to determine a minimum pipe size to insert into the concrete inlet chimney and draw this in MtoA code

Floc Hopper Group

Accomplishments
  • Determined the most effective parameters for the floc hopper (such as height, width, length) that should allow the floc hopper to fit various geometries of different plants.
  • Revised the MathCad code defining the parameters of the floc hopper.
  • Developed a first draft of the MtoA code for the floc hopper.
  • Added the wedge command to the MtoA translators
Issues
  • Need to add a few variables to the Variable Naming Guide.
  • Must determine the best placement of the floc hopper in various plants.
  • Will test our code with various plant sizes until we determine the best placement for the floc hopper.
Goals for upcoming week
  •  Finish the MtoA code for the floc hopper, so that the floc hopper can be drawn in with the rest of the plant.
  • Document the floc hopper on the wiki, which may include creating a new "floc hopper design program" on the Automated Design Algorithms page.

Materials List Group

Accomplishments
  •  Completed volume and materials calculations for exit channel, inlet channel, sludge drain, floc tank and baffles
  • Also worked on calculations and dimensions for entrance tank and sedimentation tank (tank, inlet slopes, lamella)
  • Began work on piping components
  • Met with Monroe to learn about more intricate components of the plant
Issues
  • Need to determine best way to count up lengths of different size pipes needed
  • Determine the best dimensions to give for different materials (volume vs. surface area, etc.)
Goals for upcoming week
  • Complete piping calculations
  • Compile all calculations to determine total materials
  • Update Variable Naming Guide

Exit Channel Group

Accomplishments
  • Completed coding of function that determines the minimum width of the exit channel (assuming the channel is square, that the head loss in the channel is 20 times smaller than the head loss in the launder, and that the channel must be at least 0.254 m to allow for a person to cap the launder).
Issues
  • Need to add W.ExitChannelMin to the variable naming guide
  • Need to document the code
Goals for upcoming week
  • Finish documentation
  • Begin work on another Design Team Goal

Floc Tank Group

Accomplishments
  • Began working on the exit port for the flocculator.
Issues
  • This port must also be coordinated with the baffle spacing and location, and is connected to the sed tanks.
Goals for upcoming week
  • Understanding how the floc tank and sed tank codes describe this port that they share; writing the design and MtoA code to draw in this port.
