Spring 2011 Mid-Semester Contributions
As the Sedimentation Tank Hydraulics Team is working on a new project, much of the initial research was design. I worked with Yiwen to design the tube flocculator to produce reasonably size flocs for our sedimentation tank. The flocculator was designed for an energy dissipation rate to encourage floc formation, for a sufficient scouring velocity and laminar flow, and for a residence time to produce flocs of a predicted size. Following, considerations about diffuser height and spacing were examined so as to design a manifold with no dead zones along the length of the sedimentation tank.
Subsequent experimental contributions include working the team to determine the minimum angle of repose needed to form a floc blanket.
