Floating Floc Meeting Minutes
Spring 2009 Minutes
March 27, 2009
Working Group: Bubbles
Accomplishments
- Teach in on March 25, 2009
- Finished diagram of Aeration Method process
- Uploaded an AutoCAD drawing of aeration method with SI units
Metrics
- Spoke with Monroe
- Began reformatting aeration page
Outcomes
- Decided to perform a couple more experiments using the sugar test
- Considering alternative solutions to floating floc problem
- Decided to shift our focus to sand filtration
Issues
Working Group: Sand Filter
Accomplishments
- Completion of the Sand Filter Simulation Image for Teach in
- PowerPoint Presentation for Teach in on March 25, 2009
Metrics
- Conflicts within data may be a result of the order in which the depth of the sand is changed
- Spoke to Monroe with all of floating floc group
Outcomes
- Sand Filter Method will now be the floating floc group's primary focus.
- We need to run the experiment at different flow rates, different sand densities or diameters
- We need to begin experimenting with the sugar test to ensure our setup is truly stripping the extra dissolved oxygen out of the supersaturated water.
Issues
- There seems to be some bubble formation in the flow accumulator when the depth of sand is changed. A possible solution is to let sand completely settle before running a new experiment
- The glass beads we are using now are too small and float up with the bubbles. We need to find out how big the sand particles need to be in order to prevent this.
- The upflow velocity in the column needs to be determined.
