Shear Rate

In order to verify that the equipment was working properly and to familiarize our team with FReTA, we first performed a similar experiment to one that had been done the previous semester. We modified an earlier Process Controller file(see process controller file attached)that been set to run at In this experiment we studied the effect of varying shear flow rate within the flocculator. In the experiment, we used a flocculator length of 2796 cm, influent water with an influent a turbidity of 50 100 NTU and a constant an alum dosage of 38 45 mg/L while varying . We varied the plant flow rate from 3-19 mL/s , increasing by 1 mL/s each trial to run instead at an influent turbidity of 100 NTU with an alum dosage of 45 mg/L; we maintained the same flow rate variation. The shear rate is shown in graph 1.

using ProCoDA Software The shear rates corrresponding to these flow rates is shown in Firgure 1:

Figure 1: The variation of shear rate with flow rate. From the function and the graph, when the flow rate is 5mL, the shear rate will be 57.563 s-1

The following Process Controller method file was used to run the experiment:
