I am working on updating the current Demo Plant\ to overcome existing failure modes. The main tasks for the semester are eliminating the flocculator overflow; increasing the capacity of stock tanks to achieve a continuous run time between 15-30 minutes without intervention; and updating the plant frame for ease-of-use during set-up and break-down. Currently we have succeeded in establishing the problems with the current flocculator and have taken substantial steps in fixing those problems. We have ordered a new flocculator to replace the current leaking one, and brainstormed a number of different frame configurations to replace the current un-sturdy one. We have calculated the necessary pipe lengths for realistic head loss and error rates, that correspond to a real plant, which was not done in previous designs.This semester I have joined the newly created Regional Planning team. We are responsible for helping AguaClara choose new parts of the world for plant operations. We are going to look at India as a first contender, using the connections that AguaClara LLC already has, and narrow down regions for feasibility. Using research methods and engineering cost-benefit analyses, we will evaluate the feasibility of potential sites using a variety of criteria: natural resources, surface water availability, local politics and community, local materials, etc.
