h5. AguaClara Summer Internship at Cornell

*Instructor: M.L. Weber-Shirk*
*No prerequisite*

An [application|AguaClara Summer Internship Application Form] is required for all those interested in applying.
Prior to beginning the internship a paper copy (sorry!) of the [Cornell volunteer form] must be submitted to Monroe Weber-Shirk.

The summer internship is open to students of all disciplines interested in development work and helping solve a global crisis of lack of clean water through research and design of sustainable water treatment plants. International students see the [PIRIP] program website for more details.

The first internship meeting will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 11 AM in HLS 366, but the time is flexible and can be changed due to student schedule constraints.

The internship will be 8 weeks long and will start and end the same dates as noted on Cornell's academic calendar for the 8 week summer session:
[Academic Calendar|http://www.cornell.edu/academics/calendar/]

Although the summer program is similar to [CEE 2550|CEE 2550 Course Description] or [CEE 4550|CEE 4550 Course Description], it differs in that the workload and expectations will be higher.

Students are expected to participate in a 75 minute meeting every week in class where student teams will present project information, organize teams, present reports and meet with the team leader or instructor. In addition, outside speakers and special discussions pertaining to clean water or development work are possibilities.

Extensive training for new team members will be given in the first and second weeks of the internship.

Each student team will also be expected to participate in a 30 minute meeting every week with the team leader or instructor. Team meetings will give an overview of what has been learned/accomplished.

Students should plan for the internship to be a significant time commitment over the summer. Students will also be expected to work a minimum of ten hours a week on project related work in addition to the 75 minute meeting every week and 30 minute meeting with the instructor and/or team leader.

There are several deliverables expected:
* A midterm wiki report and midterm presentation
* A final wiki report and final wiki presentation
* A detailed task list and a research plan for those involved with research will be submitted the first week

Several options are available to fund a paid AguaClara internship.
* Undergraduate students who receive Federal Work Study as part of their financial aid award can apply for funding through the [Develop Your Own Internship|Develop Your Own Internship Information] program, offered by Cornell Career Services.
* Undergraduate students are also eligible to apply for a research stipend through the [Student Grant Program|Student Grant Program Information], offered by the Cornell Engineering Learning Initiatives Program.
