I am a member of the newly formed Structure Team. Currently, I am working on the column design of the flocculator tank with Joe Beaudette. For our analysis, I helped calculate the shear and moment loads the column would have to withstand due to the water in the tank. I also determined the moment capacity of the column based on the specifications detailed in the AutoCAD file for the Alauca plant using an Excel spreadsheet. This spreadsheet can be found under the "Documents" section of the Structure Team's Wiki page. We are now working on converting the calculations done on Excel to a MathCAD file. I am also in charge of writing the reports and updating the Wiki pageThis semester I worked on the Column Interaction and Transformed Moment of Inertia methods of the tank walls and columns with Joe Beaudette. Together we determined the moment capacity of the columns and walls based off of two failure criteria: ultimate failure and incipient cracking. I also helped determine the moment these walls would have to resist due to the water pressure. I also experimented with column variables such as rebar size material properties to determine which of these would have the greatest effect on the moment capacity of the columns. All the files for our calculations can be found on the Structures Team wiki page. I am also the main writer and editor of the reports and the Wiki page. I make sure all the information is updated and presented in a clear and organized format. I found that being a member of a newly formed team presents many engineering and organizational challenges, but I have enjoyed working with my team members in trying to overcome these hurdles and producing deliverables AguaClara can use in its mission.
