Tips for Future Teams

LABORATORY METHODS

  1. Keep pH probes in pH 4 buffer when not in use.  Periodically clean out the connector in which the pH probe is placed as lime often accumulates inside.
  2. Do not use blender for more than two minutes at a time.  Allow blender to cool in between uses.
  3. Take consistent samples of effluent for ANC testingDetermine a schedule for collecting ANC samples before beginning an experiment and stick to it.
  4. Ground any metal used in the experiment the metal that the solution flows past near the pH probe the to avoid electrical charges interfering with data acquisition.

DATA COLLECTION METHODS

  1. Take pictures of the experiment while running to have a visual representation of how the lime moves within the apparatus.
  2. Record the details of each experiment on the Google calendar, in email or in another form of documentation.  Specify important things such as: date, time, flow rates, concentration, lime mass, and any unexpected things that occur (such as a broken blender, stamp box failure, etc.)

MAINTENANCE ISSUES

  1. Clean the apparatus in the industrial sink in the basement of Hollister (with Paul Charles' permission).  Use "Bright" bathroom cleaner to dissolve and remove any residual lime.
  2. Monitor the experiment for several minutes after beginning a run to check for leaks.
