MaLT Revised Charge

September 2011

The MaLT group will provide leadership for identifying and coordinating the implementation of new technology based services relevant to the library, especially those involving emerging technologies aimed at addressing patrons’ needs outside of the classroom for technologies, spaces, and services for learning and/or for using devices other than traditional computers.

  • Evaluate the use and usefulness of existing technology, software and space in the public areas of the library. This includes the Bissett collaborative center, group study rooms, public computing spaces, general study areas, the AV production room, and Mann’s publically publicly accessible seminar rooms (100, 102, 160). Recommendations for these spaces can include new types of devices/services available for check out at the circulation desk or available from the computer operator computing help desk.
    The group should choose
    1. Choose a priority space/area , technology or issue (i.e. needs for collaborative work) for each academic year and focus their efforts on that location, technology or issue. Within this context determine user behavior and needs and assess the potential usefulness of emerging technologies.
    2. Prepare annual report in April with general recommendations, including trends and anticipated needs, and requests for equipment (additional requests can be submitted as needed throughout the year).
  1. At the close of each academic year (June) present your  findings  at a roundtable presentation; this should include a review of technologies for the space in question, the results of user studies undertaken, and any hands on training that may be appropriate for staff
    1. Report will be submitted to Mann Council in June.
    2. Make recommendations for library space(s) under investigation during the academic year
  2. using the Horizon Report model, i.e. what Mann needs in 1 year, 2-3 years, and 4-5 years
    1. ; outline short term and long term Mann needs.
  • Coordinate with other Mann Divisions, Mann groups ( PAC, AV, ITSCUL committees (i.e. PTAC), CU groups outside the library, and any other appropriate staff for implementation of recommendations.
    1. Once approvals for equipment have been made, seek out appropriate groups to aid in implementation.

Original Charge:
Streamline all services and support of audiovisual technologies and circulated technical items at Mann Library, making the user's experience as close to the model of "one stop shopping" for their A/V, peripherals and room reservation needs as possible, while also ensuring our ability to provide relevant technical training and documentation for users. Also look for opportunities to partner with other CU/CUL units (CIT, ATC, others) to provide instruction on software applications that are already taught in other units (i.e. MS Office products & Adobe products, which are taught by CIT staff in CIT labs, etc.). Find ways to solicit feedback in order to determine needs for technologies, documentation, instruction, etc. Along with the Mann PAC group, Access Services, Howard Raskin, help with policy decisions relating to A/V spaces. MaLT group should drive technology-related policies, but these should mesh cleanly with other related policies.

Original Deliverables:

  • Create a single point of entry, both physical and virtual, for users to reserve any *reservable* room (not to include study rooms, carrels, etc.) in Mann. This raises the question of whether to keep keys at Circ or MaLT. Most reservations are likely going to happen online, but should this operation be at the MaLT desk?
  • Create a single point of service and support for all circulated technology in Mann (laptops, camcorders, GPS units, etc.)
  • Coordinate all support for A/V in Mann Library in a central location.
  • Determine any holes in our instruction program related to the technologies we provide. (include faculty-only training: how to use the Elmo, the Sympodium, etc.)
  • Determine charges, if any, to non-CALS users for these services.
  • Determine a suitable location(s) for all of the above.
  • Collaborate with (____ class/ ____ instructor) to assess the effectiveness of the Bissett space; recommend improvements and /or changes.
  • Brown Bag/Professional Roundtable type events spotlighting developments, trends, etc.
  • Recommendations for new technology and upgrades.
  • Provide director of Mann with an annual report describing the year's milestones, technologies we are monitoring, trends, successes, failures, statistics on measurable aspects, etc.

Additional considerations/tasks:

  • Track changes & improvements in the technology field(s) relevant to our work
  • Continuously improve our efforts
