Throughout the Fall semester, AguaClara gives presentations in to the Intro to Engineering 1050 classes for new Freshmen. The purpose of these presentations is to get new students interested in joining the project. You will likely be contacted by professors, faculty-advisors, or peer-advisors to set these up.

In general, it is recommended that two AguaClara team members conduct these presentations; if two Outreach team members are not available, utilize the AguaClara listserve Listserv (aguaclara-l@cornell.edu) to contact a replacement.  One member (or both members, to be safe) should bring a flash-drive/laptop that contains a copy of the chosen PowerPoint presentation.

A typical presentation consists of:

a) the PowerPoint presentation,
b) an explanation of the demo plant, and
c) the AguaClara in Honduras slide-show (optional).

It would also be wise to send reminder e-mails to the professor and to the team members giving the presentation before hand; follow up afterward to see how it went.

Planning Presentations

There Here are a few options for these handling planning 1050 presentations:

1)  Present in the 1050 classroom.

...

The PowerPoint portion of the  presentation (and the slide-show, if you likechoose to use it) will take place in a classroom.  Later, the students can visit the lab to see the demo plant, which you should set up beforehand.  Because the lab is in the basement of Hollister (and for the sake of time) the beginning portion of the presentation should probably be held in Hollister as well.  In the past, we have used rooms 110 and 320 - both worked out nicely.  There is always, of course, room 366.  Check with Hollister administration to book a classroom for your presentation.

If the presentation is in the lab you will want to check out a projector from the library. Make sure you have enough time to get one from another library (Mann, for instance, Mannexample) if the one in Engineering is checked out. As with all other options, set up the demo plant before beginning the presentation.  The conveniences of presenting within the lab are that set-up and clean-up are much easier, and you do not have to worry about finding an available room for the presentation.  Keep in mind, however, that the lab is not especially large and does not have any seating; taking into consideration the class size and length, you can assess which presentation option will work best.

Useful Resources

  • More Presentations that you can use are on the Outreach Resources page. You may modify the PowerPoint to your liking, but please save it as a different copy.
