Are there a large number, or unusual, applications on the iMac or laptop? (These would need to be reinstalled with a clean OS.)

  • Applications for ChemIT to install, if efficient:
    • MS Office suite
    • ChemDraw (standard is fine)
    • Adobe suite, if current version OK. Discuss with Will if Adobe Suite "needs" an upgrade
  • Are there any you'd prefer ChemIT not re-install?
    • Don't install new version of EndNote (now ~15; current ~18) or iWork. (Will has media and can install if we don't.)

To do's

Test ChronoSync on laptop

...

FIRST: Transition Will's remaining dependencies on Mac server and upgrade OSes

Step 1: Move Will's

...

data on Mac file server to CIT file server

...

2. Install and configure ChronoSync on the laptop (see below for discount link).

3. Test putting files on Will's <wrd33> directory on the CIT file server, syncing, disconnecting, modifying the file on the laptop, reconnecting, and finally checking the file from the iMac.

  • Test other "round-trip".

Transition from Mac server to CIT file server

Step 1

Carry laptop to ChemtIT's office.

...

  • Will will try to reconcile his two work-related "Documents" directories (on on iMac, one on MacBook) since there is a 13GB difference in size (see table, above).
  • Will will then move all his Documents directory files to the CIT file server so none remain on the Mac server.

Once this is down, Will's primary (non-Dropbox) work documents are no longer on the Mac server for either the iMac or the MacBook. Instead, those files are on the CIT server.

  • We keep the Mac server running so the iMac and MacBook properly log in and experience no operational change, per se.

Related info:

  • Will's iMac is connecting fine to the CIT file server.
  • Will's MacBook is connecting fine to the CIT file server, including from Will's home (via VPN).

Step 2: Upgrade desktop iMac

Timing: When Will is away this Thur/ Fri (8/15-16).

Leave iMac in Will's office, but ensure Will has logged into the iMac so ChemIT staff can "see" what he sees under his account.

  • This allows ChemIT to grab any preferences on the Mac server, such as browser bookmarks and the like.

ChemIT then upgrades iMac with clean (and current) OS, 10.8.

...

  • A "clean slate" removes any connection to Mac server.
  • Re-enable Enable access to CIT file server and ChronoSync.
  • Enable's NetID/p/w access to iMac.

A this point, only iMac has access to Will's documents on the Mac server. His laptop does not have this access; it only has access to the CIT file server.

Step 2

Move iMac to ChemIT's office.

...

Step 3: Upgrade MacBook

Timing: AFTER Will confirms iMac is "good". Hoping for early in the week of 8/19".

Ensure Will has logged into the MacBook so ChemIT staff can "see" what he sees under his account.

  • This allows ChemIT to grab any preferences on the Mac server, such as browser bookmarks and the like.

In ChemIT's office, upgrade laptop with clean (and current) OS, 10.8.

...

  • A "clean slate" removes any connection to Mac server.
  • Enable Re-enable access to CIT file server and ChronoSync.
  • Enable's NetID/p/w access to iMac.

Step 4: Move Mac file server out of Will's office

Timing: AFTER Will confirms iMac and MacBook are "good".

Move server to ChemIT's office for re-purposing or (eventual) disposal.

Will's

...

to-do:

  • Will to decide date Mac file server is no longer needed by his group, and if it may be used for something else then.

SECOND: Test ChronoSync on laptop, and hopefully implement

1. Enable the laptop to access Will's directory on the CIT file server.

  • Test off-campus, using VPN.

ChronoSync software

The following software may help address Will's needs to have the same set of files on his 2 Macs, even when off-line for the laptop:
