Fall 2016 Contributions

This semester I hope to work in conjunction with my two team members to research and develop a design or prototype of a microbe detector. Since we are a new team we will spend a good amount of time researching microbial detection techniques. Although this is time consuming it is a necessary step in creating a product. In order to make our product applicable to the water treatment plant sites, we will also need to specify our research for low resource detection. Though it may be a stretch, I would very much like to use the sliding colony counting method. However, if the plant operators do not require quantitative information on pathogens, then we will use a absence/presence method instead since it will be a cheaper, easier form of detection. It may be difficult for this team to create and implement our system all in this one semester but at the very least I would like to come up with a prototype. For this fall semester, the CSFBR team will be responsible for putting together the countercurrent water filtration system upon completing all of the individual components such as the flocculator and the newly designed reactors. Further into the semester, we will be optimizing the shape of the reactors to maximize floc flow out of the weir and minimize waste water flow velocity to reduce the amount of water wasted. The positioning of the reactors within the system will also be tested for differences in dye removal efficiency. Within the subteam, my role will be to proofread all articles and presentations. Though everyone contributes to the fabrication of the reactors, my role within the fabrication process is to cut and prepare all materials. As the only returning AguaClara member on this subteam I will guide my other team member through the semester and the workings of AguaClara.
