What services can PhysIT provide to the Physics Chair which they would value, above and beyond what Barry provides?

Summary

Barry (LASSP) provides IT consulting support for the Chair's computer. However, PhysIT provides services in Physics Admin which the Chair depends on (network, printers, monitor) so this clarification can be helpful.

Summary

(1) Barry is primarily responsible for providing IT consulting support for the Chair's computer.

  • Barry is responsible to arrange staff consulting support for when he is not available.

(2) PhysIT is responsible to provide IT support for certain services the Chair's computer uses, and PhysIT is happy to facilitate using those services.

Specifically, PhysIT provides Physics Admin the following services which are used by the Chair's computerRegarding the Chair's computer, PhysIT is responsible for IT support for:

  • The network used within the Physics Admin areas and thus facilitating connecting to them from .
    • PhysIT is happy to facilitate connecting Jeevak's laptop to this network.
  • Physics Admin printers and thus facilitating connecting to them.
  • 1 Faculty room computer
  • 1 printers (networked printer in Library)

...

  • The printers used within Physics Admin areas.
    • PhysIT is happy to facilitate connecting Jeevak's laptop to these printers.
  • The Chair's Apple monitor.
    • PhysIT is happy to help in any way if their are issues with the monitor.

As of spring 2015, the current Chair is Jeevak Parpia <jmp9>.

  • Jeevak received a new Apple Macbook Air (laptop computer) this spring 2015.

    Networking and phones

PhysIT provides technical and administrative support (coordinated with Nancy Searles in Physics) for all Cornell CIT networking and telephones in the area, with the exception of the Nick's office computer.

For Nick's office computer, he will administer the IP connections directly with CIT (AccessNet). Even for Nick's office computer, if networking or telephone service is not working, he will contact PhysIT, who shall determine the cause of the problem and request assistance from CIT Network and Communication Services (NCS) as necessary.

    Active Directory ( a.k.a "The Domain" )

PhysIT, as part of our standard management, attaches computers to the Cornell Active Directory service provided by CIT. Computers are placed in the Arts and Sciences Division, Physics Department Subdivision. As a a result of this, names for computers and user accounts can be somewhat limited (per CIT's requirements as part of managing this shared campus resource).

Nick's office computer will not be connected to the centralized management/Cornell Active Directory services, and as such will not gain from centralized management PhysIT uses. Also, Nick's computer will not have an administrative account for PhysIT's use.

    Details and Notes

PhysIT can best support Physics Admin computers which use PhysIT installed OS, using our standard procedures.

    • Any other system could theoretically be supported by PhysIT if we developed a negotiated support contract. However, such one-off systems are unlikely to be cost-effective for PhysIT to support

    Notes

    A few best practices include:

    • All use of computers is at the user-level, not as Admin.
      • Use Admin account to elevate privileges within the user account or to temporarily login as Admin to make the necessary changes.
    • Don't establish network shares.
