Carl Talsma: Individual Contributions
Fall 2014 Contributions
As a part of the Fall 2014 Fabrication team, Carl helped to create a hydraulically similar model of the weir inlet system of the stacked rapid sand filter. The inlet system is designed for large plants with multiple sand filters that need to be back washed using the same inlet flow. The weir system achieves this through using a removable weir which diverts the required backwash flow to the appropriate filter. The fabrication team made a scaled autoCADD model which remained hydraulically similar to the full size plant. The model was built from PVC and was made to adapt to several different weir configuration allowing it to adapt to changes in the design of the weirs. The team also discussed how a removable weir would be implemented in a full size plant and methods in which a operator might be able to remove a weir in an actual plant.
