Spring 2012

This is my second semester at Cornell and my first time working with AguaClara. I am currently working on a team of three to optimize the way the Stacked Rapid Sand Filter functions. Unfortunately, there is little to no previous work done in this specific field of filtration. Remembering this, understanding the appropriate methods in order to optimize the backwash process and the time required to do so will require primarily trial and error experimentation. More specifically, the team is working towards minimizing the backwash process time to around 6 minutes. If it does disrupt this goal, the team also hopes to experiment with the efficacy of 4 layers of the sand filter as opposed to the six current layers.
