AguaClara Summer Internship at Cornell

Fill out the summer internship application is required for all those interested in applying. A hold harmless agreement must also be signed before working in the AguaClara laboratories. Any non-Cornell students must also fill out the Volunteer form and provide proof of insurance.

The summer internship is open to students of all disciplines interested in development work and helping solve a global crisis of lack of clean water through research and design of sustainable water treatment plants. International students see the PIRIP program website for more details.

The first internship meeting will be held on Monday, June 11, 2012 at 11 AM in HLS 366. It is crucial that interns attend the first week of the internship to receive proper training. Other scheduling constraints can be accommodated.

The internship will be 8 weeks long and will start and end the same dates as noted on Cornell's academic calendar for the 8 week summer session: June 11-August 3
Academic Calendar

Although the summer program is similar to CEE 2550 or CEE 4550, it differs in that the workload and expectations will be higher.

Students are expected to participate in a 75 minute meeting every week in class where student teams will present project information, organize teams, present reports and meet with the team leader or instructor. In addition, outside speakers and special discussions pertaining to clean water or development work are possibilities.

Extensive training for new team members will be given in the first and second weeks of the internship.

Each student team will also be expected to participate in a 30 minute meeting every week with the team leader or instructor. Team meetings will give an overview of what has been learned/accomplished.

Students should plan for the internship to be a significant time commitment over the summer; there are 20-hour/week (part-time) and 40-hour/week (full time) options.

There are several deliverables expected:

  • A midterm presentation
  • A final presentation
  • A team research report will be submitted every two weeks

Several options are available to fund a paid AguaClara internship.

  • Undergraduate students who receive Federal Work Study as part of their financial aid award can apply for funding through the Develop Your Own Internship program, offered by Cornell Career Services. However, this program requires matching funding and thus is only possible if the AguaClara program has enough funding to provide the match.
  • Undergraduate students are also eligible to apply for a research stipend through the Student Grant Program, offered by the Cornell Engineering Learning Initiatives Program.
