Fall 2011 Contributions - Water Treatment Technology Selection Guide (WTTSG)

Team Members: Siwei Oon, Li Hui Goh

Siwei's contribution towards the development of the WTTSG can be summarized in the following phases:

  1. Data Acquisition Stage:
    1. Jointly researched on the performance of hydraulic-based Unit Treatment Processes for codification within the WTTSG
    2. Jointly researched on the regulatory standards, and drinking water guidelines for codification within the WTTSG
    3. Jointly developing the write-up for an introduction to the technologies - targeted for understanding by a laypeson.
    4. Jointly developing a list of 'Top 15 Questions to ask your Technology Vendors'
  2. DSS Development Stage:
    1. Jointly developed a user interface for extracting situational context from the users regarding their drinking water treatment problem.
    2. Implementing the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methodology within the DSS to provide an optimal solution. In addition, a filtering mechanism was also incorporated to realize an MCDM solution with full resource compliance.

Reflections:

This project has been a realization journey that information about water treatment should not be taken for granted. Through the development of an expert-guidance system for technology selection, I feel both fortunate and glad that I have played a role in bringing the layperson closer to understanding the water that they drink everyday.
