Summer 2014 Contributions

I am a member of the laminar/turbulent tube flocculation team.

For the laminar tube flocculator, this semester we will be implementing a system to better control the dosage of clay to the reactor, in order to maintain a constant and appropriate turbidity, as well as a system to control the addition of hot and cold water into the stock water tank, in order to maintain a temperature in the reactor that is relatively equal to the ambient temperature. We will also implement a system that uses pressure sensors throughout the flocculator to get a better measurement of the head loss. Once these systems are in place, we will ensure that the SWaT system is functioning correctly and that flocs are settling out, and then experimentation will be done with different coagulant concentrations, in order to test the effectiveness and function of the laminar tube flocculator.

For the turbulent tube flocculator, we will determine the flow rate and head loss throughout the system in order to better understand how the flocculator functions and to determine how the flocs are settling out. We will also improve the existing system of controlling the water temperature, seeking to maintain a temperature that is constantly equivalent to the ambient temperature. Testing will also be done to determine the best way to meter clay into the system, and we will look to implement PID control in order to maintain a constant turbidity in the reactor. Once the system is functioning correctly, experimentation can be done to determine how the flocculator functions with various turbidities, coagulant doses, residence times, and flow rates.
