I am working on updating the current Demo Plant|\ to overcome existing failure modes. The main tasks for the semester are eliminating the flocculator overflow; increasing the capacity of stock tanks to achieve a continuous run time between 15-30 minutes without intervention; and updating the plant frame for ease-of-use during set-up and break-down. Currently we have succeeded in establishing the problems with the current flocculator and have taken substantial steps in fixing those problems. We have ordered a new flocculator to replace the current leaking one, and brainstormed a number of different frame configurations to replace the current un-sturdy one. We have calculated the necessary pipe lengths for realistic head loss and error rates, that correspond to a real plant, which was not done in previous designs. At the end of the semester, we have accomplished many of our goals. The flocculator has been reconstructed using laser-cutting technology, and the plant has been redesigned to maximize efficiency and stability while still accounting for appropriate head losses and flow rates to mimic a real plant. Future work for the plant will include improving the chemical dose controller and finding alternate ways to construct extra flocculators, since our avenue of construction will no longer be free after this semester.
