New Challenges
Powdered Poly Aluminum Chloride
Powdered poly aluminum chloride is being used in Guatemala at one of their hydraulic water treatment plants (El Cambray). This provides a new opportunity for a way to treat water with low alkalinity. Apparently the costs are comparable to alum because you use less of the product, but it costs more per kg. Contact Grasim Industries to determine how to access their product and to see if they are willing to donate some of their product with their charity work.

- From CEE 4540 in 2008 we have an emergency water treatment plant proposal.

Automated Chlorinator for self serve community water stations
Build on the automated dose controller to create a device that automatically meters in the correct amount of chlorine when a valve is opened to take water from a public standpipe.
Point of Use Slow Sand Filter
The AguaClara experience with flow control and with the use of aluminum based coagulants to improve filtration provides an outstanding opportunity to develop a point of use slow sand filter that performs far better than any of the current models. From CEE 4540 in 2010 we have one POU SSF proposal that incorporates simple flow control and hypothesizes that intermittent small dosages of alum could improve filter performance.
