Floc blanket stability is maintained by a balance of the hindered settling velocitiy of particles in the floc blanket against the average upflow velocity in the clarifier.

Research Goals

The primary goal of the research currently is to understand how operational variables such as: provision of flocculation beforehand in a flocculator, upflow velocity, coagulant dosage, and floc blanket height affect floc blanket performance at various influent conditions (pH, turbidity, natural organic matter).

A secondary, but equally important goal is to understand the mechanism behind which a floc blanket operates so we can further optimize performance through these operational variables.
