Objective: To develop sustainable highway design options to mitigate air and noise pollution.

Background: Traffic is a major source of both air and noise pollution in urban areas. Although solutions to mitigate each type of pollution have been developed separately, an integrated, and potentially more effective, approach to address both types of pollution synergistically is lacking.

Scope of Work: MEng students will be tasked to conduct noise analysis using Traffic Noise Model (TNM, http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/noise/traffic_noise_model/), evaluate alternative methods to TNM, work with PhD students to acquire results from air pollution analysis, and develop strategies to reduce both air and noise pollution through alternative highway designs (such as elevated highways, roadside barriers, green infrastructure, etc.).
