Objective: To design a flow meter that can be mounted to the exhaust pipe measuring real-time exhaust flow rates of a moving vehicle.

Background: Vehicle fuel consumption rates under real-world driving conditions often vary significantly from those certified in laboratory tests. Real-time measurements of exhaust flows and air-to-fuel ratios provide a non-intrusive way to quantify fuel consumption rates.

Scope of work: We will first evaluate the current methods of exhaust flow measurements in terms of performance and costs. Then we will design, fabricate and test a portable exhaust flow meter that can be mounted on a moving vehicle under normal driving conditions.

Qualifications: Previous experience in mechanical designs and fabrication are desirable.
