Cornell University Sustainable Design: Sustainability Research Facility
In a joint effort of nearly every College at Cornell, Cornell is developing a groundbreaking new energy research facility called the Cornell University Sustainable Design: Sustainability Research Facility (CUSD:SRF) that will be designed and built on-campus. Already from the design work that has been done for the CUSD:SRF building, the team has been asked to help explore/design/create in 10 different design areas for the 1st Academic Building that will be built on the NY Tech Campus!Across both aspects, students from Engineering, Architecture, DEA, the Business school, and others will be given the opportunity to:
• Earn leading roles in the building design creation
• Design cutting edge alternative energy faculties
• Explore new energy efficient technologies and building techniques
• Be part of efforts to promote and advance the awareness of the building and its energy research findings while working with exterior corporate and alumni sponsors
• Work with a team of over 20dedicated Faculty, Professional staff, and Professional consultants to develop career marketable skills and experience in all of these areas
Course Credit and M-Eng Project credit are available.
More than just creating a new landmark building at Cornell of modern classrooms and laboratories, the Cornell University Sustainable Design Sustainability Research Facility (CUSD:SRF) will also be designed to be an actual research testbed. As a result, this project offers opportunities for exploring new modular building designs and in incorporating a wide array of both exterior “off-the-grid” energy generation such as solar, geothermal, biomass, and hydro as well as new infrastructure technologies such as building-within-a-building architectural designs, flexible space interior designs, and modern energy control systems, all while utilizing novel site development and performance practices. In the NYC Tech Campus efforts, students will also be able to explore topics such as wind, waste management, sensor systems, novel lighting techniques, waste water, and occupant comfort usage models. Furthermore, students will learn and gain experience with advanced planning and design techniques that are used to effectively create highly complex designs; the same design practices that are utilized today by NASA.
This project was also created with students from the long time running Cornell Solar Decathlon student team which has successfully built smaller scale sustainable homes that were displayed on the National Mall in Washington DC and earned front page articles in the national newspapers like the Washington Post. With the creation of this new project, the team working on this project is now called the Cornell Sustainable Design Research Facility Team.
