Self-reporting materials indicate damage evolution prior to loss of function without any external probing. Our group is working on developing self-reporting polymer composites based on force sensitive chemical units – mechanophores – covalently bonded into an otherwise typical polymer. Specifically we use a color changing mechanophore to make composites that change color prior to failure.

This MEng project will focus on opto-mechanical characterization of self-reporting polymers and composites with potential for designing new materials and/or conducting finite element simulations if interested. Some material processing will be required - synthesis experience a plus but not required.
