Blog from January, 2013

Our region is now switched to Office365 for our e-mail. You can read CIT’s  What’s Different? webpage for more information.

How did the day after go for you?  Hopefully most of you didn’t even notice the switch and that those of you with mobile devices were able to follow CIT’s instructions to update your settings.

I have heard from some of you about some issues, and I did have a couple myself but CIT has been doing a good job in documenting the well-known issues and their fixes.  Read below about some common problems or click here for CIT’s “Known Issues and Troubleshooting Tips” webpage.   If CIT doesn’t have your issue listed, you can always contact the Cornell helpdesk: http://www.it.cornell.edu/support/

  • My Outlook 2010 address book isn't working the way it used to.
Some options related to your Outlook 2010 address book may have been changed when your account was moved to Office 365, such as your default address book is now incorrect. Take these steps to make your Outlook 2010 address book work more smoothly.
  • Outlook 2010 repeatedly prompts me for my credentials.
You may have credentials stored in a format Office 365 can't read. This is most commonly seen when you try to connect to a Resource account (Exchange Group Account, Room account, or Equipment account). Take these steps to clear the credentials in Outlook 2010 and (optionally) store new ones.
  • If that doesn’t fix the problem, then I suggest removing and re-adding that account.
    • Deleting that resource/group account:
      • Click the File tab.
      • Under Account Information, click Account Settings, and then click Account Settings.
      • Select the group email account that you want to remove (NOT your netid@cornell.edu account), and then click Remove.
      • To confirm removal of the account, click Yes.
    • Now add that account back in by following these steps.

E-mail Switch to Office365

Hi all!  I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday and a happy start to the new year!

On Monday, Dec 31st, you should have received an e-mail from Cornell about our upcoming e-mail switch to Office365.  As the date of the switch gets closer (January 15th), you will also receive more informative e-mails from campus.

What does this switch mean to you?

For most people, not too much.  Most of the change is in the background and you shouldn’t notice a difference in accessing your e-mail.  The Outlook 2010 program that you use now will be the same and your e-mail and calendar will be the same.  If you use Outlook on the Web, by going to https://exchange.cornell.edu, you will need to go to the new url http://outlook.cornell.edu/ after the switch.

Please note: In an effort to prepare for the switch your local IT contact and myself have been going around and making sure everyone has upgraded from Office 2007 to Office 2010.  (You can see what version you are running by clicking on File, then Help in Outlook.  It will list the version there. If you have not been upgraded, please see your local IT contact ASAP.)

After the migration

You will need to log in using your full email address (netid@cornell.edu) rather than just your netid.

If you manage an EGA (Exchange Group Account)

These used to be called “Special Mailboxes” and are typically set up for a group (ex. monroe@cornell.edu or wyomoco4hcamp@cornell.edu_)_ or a resource (ex. meeting room), there are some steps you’ll need to take before the migration.  If this applies to you, more information about this can be found in step 2 on Cornell’s IT website.

Do you check your e-mail on a mobile device?

For more information on the upcoming migration, please review the Cornell IT web site or talk to your local IT contact or me (Jenn) if you have specific questions!
