This page is a companion to the Workshop called Avenues to Equitable Access held on 9/23/2014.  This page covers some of the basic advantages of HathiTrust, as well as a synopsis HathiTrust Enhanced Access, the offering that provides e-access to full-text of books held in print by the Cornell Library for those in the Cornell community who have certified their print disability.

HathiTrust is a

  • consortium - over 90 partner institutions
  • digital library - ~ 11.5 million volumes (and growing all the time)
  • preservation repository - persistent links for resources in lower left navigation bar for both book and page level persistent access.

Exploring the digital library

  • The web site has documentation for accessibility features.
  • Basic search (both catalog and full-text), advanced catalog search, advanced full-text search
    • Help file is very helpful! Refer to this if you get lost, or ask a librarian for help.
  • Every book is full-text searchable, but not all are viewable on screen.
    • In large part due to copyright
    • Full view (~4M) and limited view (~7M)
  • Reading online: image and OCR view
  • Persistent links for book and for page. 
  • Logging in with your Cornell NetID and password
    • Create collections of books for your own use (you can limit search to within a collection)
    • Download PDF any item in the public domain.  

Enhanced Access - See the service guide for details.  A broad outline is below.

  • Register with Student Disabilities Services.  (Faculty and Staff should register with MLA.)  Do not send your registration by email
  • Search HathiTrust for the books you want to see...
    • If you log in, you can download any book in full view immediately.  
    • For books in limited view, copy the persistent links to them into a list.
  • Send the list to CUL-HTProxy-L@cornell.edu expect a reasonable turnaround based on the length of your list. (smile)
    • Not all books are eligible.  Staff will have to check to see if Cornell library has each in print. 
  • Receive full-text of the eligible books on your list, by either
    • Cornell dropbox - you will be notified by email when pickup is ready
    • Thumbdrive - if you supply one to the proxy who answers you.
  • Note that the provision of this material is affected by constraints mentioned in the guide.  Please review these carefully and abide by them.
