While the mission of the Library requires on-site operations carried out by on-site staff, flex place requests will be considered and evaluated by supervisors based on the relevant Cornell policies and this set of criteria. The requests will be evaluated in relation to specific job functions and job descriptions, also taking into account the employee’s performance.

To create an excellent user experience, staff work locations need to support library services fully, including CUL's ability to handle contingencies. The following criteria are intended to guide staff and supervisors in determining which functions within CUL require on-site work. These criteria do not on their own distinguish between positions that require all on-site work, or positions that may be partially on-site. Supervisors will lead discussions with staff requesting flex place arrangements to see if it is possible to arrive at a flexible work option that allows CUL to fulfill its mission while taking the individual’s needs into account as much as possible.

To ensure smooth operation and services, those who support and supervise on-campus staff and student workers will be expected to be on campus fully or partially.

In addition, the following functions require on-site presence:

  1. Managing physical facilities and ensuring that environments are secure, easy to navigate, and welcoming
  2. Providing multiple modes of services, including on-site, in support of an excellent user experience
  3. Processing and managing physical collections
  4. Delivering in-person classes, training, or educational programs
  5. Supporting in-person events, tours, exhibitions, and development efforts
  6. Working with equipment, software, or materials that are located on-site
  7. Working with sensitive data which cannot be protected remotely or should not leave campus (either digital or hard copy)
  8. Attending on-site audits and/or investigations
  9. Conducting user research and reporting on the user experience
  10. Onboarding new employees or receiving onboarding training and coaching as needed
  11. Working off-site should not add to the workloads of those working on-site
