CUL’s physical materials collections comprises of almost 10 million items. For purposes of reporting (both internally and externally), counts of these physical items are often grouped into formats such as books, serials, visual materials, etc. The CUL Folio Physical Material Bib Format Display table provides multiple suggested ways to group format counts based on MARC coding.* These translations have been carefully reviewed and agreed upon by CUL cataloging subject matter experts as well as by reporting experts.
The table documentation contains detailed information about the table, including differences between historical and revised conventions.
*Note that in the future, there will be catalog records in FOLIO that do not have underlying MARC records. CUL will be working to define how to categorize formats via Inventory fields and their coding. (Note also that this table should not be used for e-resource grouping.)
