Completed ~Dec 2014, to resolve reported problems. Move hosting of Physic's FileMakerPro server to A&S. (As has been done successfully in CCB, as a point of reference.)

Scope

Users of FMPro in Physics

Process

To do

Added 5/8/14, per Roger noting this to Oliver:

We need admin p/w to this server.

HARDEST STEP!

  • Clarify databases needed (currently 25!), and their relationships to each other.
  • Establish proper access configurations.
  • Possible: Move databases to new PhysIT virtual machine (VM) running FMPro v11 (since more robust than current physical server). (Again, temporary!)
    • Michael Hint's recommendation following server move on 12/5/13: Don't waste time on a VM. Get rid of Retro, and find out who and what on all the Filemaker files and ship the entire thing to Arts as fast as possible.

Migrate databases to A&S's FMPro server.

  • If done sooner than later, won't have to (sentence not finished: won't have to what?!).

Done

Early Nov: Changed the FMPro's address to a cname rather than just an IP number.
During Nov: Changing staff computers so they point to the cname rather than to an IP number.

  • On-going for this step: identify who is using the FMPro server.

12/5/13: Server physically moved to PhysIT's server room, from Barry's server room. (Temporary!)

  • When cut-over made, any remaining computers not able to access the FMPro server will be changed as soon as PhysIT hears about it.
  • Some access elements had to change (3 were wide open with no password!).
  • Upgraded FMPro server from v10 to v11v5.
  • Java updated to 7 40.
  • No AD change.
  • Turned off a bunch of file sharing that didn't look legitimate.
  • External drive set is up and running but I didn’t touch Retrospect as I don’t care about it. (Everyone on Retrospect is expected to have EZ-Backup within a week.)

Notes

Move FileMakerPro files from Barry's server to the A&S server.

Q: Able to do sooner than later? (Since dependent on Barry's server.)

PhysIT to look over current files and develop a proposal for John.

Option 1: Move server to PhysIT, temporarily. Less disruption, less risk. Then migrate to A&S's FMPro server.
Option 2: Migrate to A&S's FMPro server.
