Linux and SGI systems

Linux workstations (2)

12/15/15, Michael recovered a file for Steven

Steven had lost a file of a paper, containing more than 4 days worth of work. Steven thought the file had been on the computer itself, and asked if it was backed-up.

The Linux workstations store their home directory of the users on the CIT SFS file server. And that service does provide versioning. Thus, Michael recovered the previous version using CIT's instructions:

Useful Linux file commands for this recovery:

Present working directory:

  • pwd

Learn where the user's home directory is actually mapped to:

  • df -h

Restoring a file. per CIT's instructions above:

  • cd .snapshot

SGI system

Info Steven Lee shared with Oliver, 9/11/13

The application running on Lee's SGI system, Materials Studio, allows for the viewing of really complicated crystal structures.

The application on this system was re-written by company to run on Windows. But the Windows application is not nearly as good as this older application.

Thus, Steven wants this system to run for as long as possible. He knows it can't run forever, of course.
