This how-to article will walk you through the steps required to create an Event report in Google Analytics.

This article assumes that you have access to the relevant Google Analytics property. Contact Thomas Deneuville at tcd55@cornell.edu to request access.

Note: Only events that have been coded in your page will appear here. Events are not coded by default.

1. Start by selecting the time period you are looking at.

2. Under Behavior > Events, select the Overview report.

3. The Overview report will show the breakdown of all events during the time period you've selected.

4. Events in Google Analytics are identified as follows:

Category > Action > Label

In this 1865 example, downloads for the Digital Swag pages are coded as follows:

Download (category) > Link (action) > File name with screen resolution (label)

5. Click on Download to view all events under the same category.

6. On this next page, all Download events are selected.

7. Click on Event Label to view all the file names with screen resolutions (Event Action will only result in Click, the same action for all these events).

8. This report shows a breakdown by file name and resolution.

9. Apply a secondary dimension to show EMPLIDs, or any other information you might have passed in the URL chain.

10. Adjust Show rows to display all the events you'd like to analyze.

11. Click on Export to export this report as a PDF, Excel file, etc.

12. See steps 10-12 in this other article to learn how to schedule an e-mail report.
