Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi is a Gram-negative foodborne pathogen1 that can cause severe foodborne disease. A publication by Scallan et al.2 in 2011 estimated that 1,821 human foodborne typhoid fever cases, including 0 deaths, occur annually in the US. It has been estimated that worldwide 21 million illnesses are caused by Salmonella Typhi and 200,000 deaths each year3
