Symantec Endpoint Protection License Discontinued

Cornell is discontinuing its use of the Symantec Endpoing Protection (SEP) antivirus software. This includes licensing for personal computers. Cornell's license for SEP expires October 2016.

For Cornell owned computers, SEP is being replaced with Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection (SCEP).

Managed Computers and SCEP

SCEP is pushed out to CNF Computing managed Windows computers and to computers in the CNF Mac-Lite managed tier. To enroll your Cornell owned Macintosh computer in the CNF Mac-Lite managed tier, contact CNF Computing.

Non-Managed Cornell Owned Computers

Cornell Policy 5.10 only requires that Desktops and Laptops run anti-virus software. Cornell recommends SCEP for Windows and Macintosh computers and ClamAV for Linux computers. Contact CNF Computing for a copy of the SCEP installer.

Personally Owned Computers

The SCEP license does not cover personally owned computers. Cornell recommends:

  • For Windows 8, 8.1, & 10 – use the built-in Windows Defender client.
  • For Windows Vista and 7 – download and install Microsoft Security Essentials
  • For Macintosh, Sophos
  • For Linux, use ClamAV (may be part of your Linux distribution ... also available separately)

Remember to first uninstall Symantec prior to installing new Anti-virus software.

Exceptions

Cornell owned computers that cannot have anti-virus software installed must be documented as exceptions. The CNF maintained exception list is stored in Cornell Box.
