Notes and follow-up from July 11, 2014 webex

Updated August 6, 2014

This is a summary of the webex discussion on July 11, 2014 following the change of focus announced for TSI in June. It also summarizes further steps taken as a result of action items from that meeting.

Kate Harcourt attended this meeting as the team’s liaison. The group reviewed progress since Columbia’s visit to Cornell in April and discussed the change of project focus.

1. "Pressure points"

The working groups have been asked to review areas where Columbia and Cornell take different approaches. Naun and Irina have begun compiling a list -

2. Cataloguing vendors

We are documenting the vendors that we receive MARC records from. Also of potential interest is a list (last updated in 2012) compiled by Big Heads.

3. Vendor records recommendations

These are documents from a group that Mark Wilson served on:

4. LD4L (for info)

This was mentioned at the meeting in connection with BIBFRAME testing. It's a major Mellon-funded linked data project involving Stanford, Harvard, and Cornell.

5. Contemporary Composers Web Archive

Bonna Boettcher has confirmed Cornell’s commitment to the project, including its cataloguing aspect. Tracey Snyder will work with Russell on further steps.

6. Figures for Romanian gift

Results of additional sampling done by Pedro -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Na5nfMzPgYfiM0yLlv7rzyZvxvhAPChrmDG82sdAWCw/edit

7. Cataloguing needs in other languages (preliminary information - may warrant further investigation)

Columbia sends the following materials directly to precat because of a lack of language support (information taken from May 2012 report,https://docs.google.com/document/d/1s5jRCiPWAxlTGTC0J1UP3phCgaw7v8cS6qZoQG963aw/edit#)

  • African vernacular languages
  • Arabic
  • Armenian
  • Hebrew
  • Hungarian
  • Persian
  • Southeast Asian vernacular languages
  • Turkish

The main language where Cornell lacks coverage is Hebrew, where we have a backlog of over 300 titles. We have smaller pockets of uncatalogued materials in other languages. In addition, there is also of course the Romanian gift.

8. Documentation

We discussed using the Libguide prototype as a model. Lois and Irina have had further discussions about further steps. They are developing a spreadsheet showing Cornell and Columbia procedures.

9.  Voyager global change

This is new functionality that the Batch Processing group is looking at. Columbia has a test copy of Voyager database that they have offered to make available to us to experiment with.

10.  BIBFRAME testing

This appears to be a promising area for collaboration. Melanie and Christina are likely participants on the Columbia side. Naun will contact Melanie and Christina after consulting wtih Cornell LD4L project team.

11. Low barrier metadata creation project

This is a project involving several large institutions and OCLC. The objective is to create a web form to allow input of bibliographic records. The current focus is on evaluating a prototype web form. Adam Chandler is coordinating Cornell's participation in this phase of the project.

12. Authority control vendors

Naun met with LTI and Backstage representatives at ALA. A possible issue with LTI is that they have not yet considered their position on working with non-LC authorities, such as VIAF and FAST, which are maintained by OCLC. They believe there could be a licensing issue which may pose an obstacle. Neither vendor has yet started working with an Alma system but they do not believe it will be a problem.

13. Eastview Chinese MARC records

Sarah Elman will check on progress with the word division issue.

14. Proof registry entry for Korean cataloguing project

This project was concluded in June 2014 when Cornell’s Korean cataloguer, Sung Ok Kim, reduced her work hours. Sarah Elman and Naun will draft a proof registry entry after Sarah’s return from travel in August.
