Notes from JSMIN meeting, June 5, 2014

Attending: Adam, Colleen, Jesse, Jim, Joyce, Kate, Mark, Naun, Robert

Kate summarized the outcomes from the TSI Administrative Team meeting on Friday, May 30th.  Comments included:

  • Clarify the term "pressure points" in action item #8 from that meeting (Jim will change that item to read: "Share and discuss differing and mutual pressure points/priorities").
  • Reaffirm the TSI Operating Principles and incorporate them into our pivot from integration to initiative, including the practice of routinely looking for 2CUL solutions for local problems whenever possible.
  • Another way to look at the current turn is that we are rescaling the project.

Things to keep in mind when communicating our change in direction:

  • Communicate the new plan to everyone.
  • Communicate the change and its potential ramifications more directly to working group leads, possibly through both a blanket email and individual meetings with liaisons.
  • Need to move forward in a positive way.

We also discussed the effect that our reconceptualization of TSI will have on the Alma question:

  • Without the mandate to integrate, the implementation of a new, immature LMS is likely to be more disruptive than useful for TSI at this time.
  • The longer we can wait for Alma (or other next generation systems) to improve, the better.
  • Moving forward along separate paths towards new system implementation would be counterproductive for TSI.
  • We should evaluate the need for and promise of a new LMS according to the same four drivers we're proposing for TSI projects and collaboration: quality, productivity, improvement, and innovation.
  • It would be useful to step back from Alma and perform another environmental scan of next-generation LMS products (when the time is right to move off Voyager), focusing on our shared functional requirements.  What is particularly important for technical services is interoperability among different (presumably best-in-class) systems -- including the LMS.

Action items:

  1. Based on input from last week's Admin Team meeting and today's JSMIN meeting, Kate and Jim will post a draft outline of the new vision for TSI to members of both groups and invite comment via Basecamp.
  2. Liaisons will contact working group and other TSI team leaders about the pivot.
  3. Kate and Jim will post the survey results in their next Occasional Progress Report.
  4. JSMIN will continue to meet monthly via Polycom, but on the second Thursday of the month, 3:00-4:00.
