Overview

CNF has created two public email folders for staff. One is called "Spam" and one is called "Ham". Both of these folders live under the "Public" namespace. You can think of "Public" as equivalent to a top level divider in a filesystem. Your normal INBOX lives at the very top. And then sub fodlers live at the same level as or under your INBOX.

Mutt

In the Mutt email client, you access the Public email folders just like any others. Eg to access the Public folder "Spam", I would type into the folder selection prompt:

=Public/Spam

and then to get back to my INBOX, I would type in:

=INBOX

You can also tab complete folder names. So, I could type in:

=Public

and then hit tab a couple of times. The first tab will complete "Public" by adding a slash to it. Additional tabs will display the list of folders under "Public".

This method of selecting folders works no matter if you are changing folder (the 'c' command), copying one or more messages to a folder (the capital 'C' command), or moving (saving) a message to a folder (the 's' command). Note that things can get a little tricky with INBOX as it is both an actual mailbox as well as a divider with mailboxes living underneath INBOX.

The following can be added to your .muttrc to map the 'S' key to save the current message to the Public/Spam folder:

macro index S s=Public/Spam\n
macro pager S s=Public/Spam\n

WebMail (RoundCube)

  1. Login to RoundCube webmail
  2. Note that "Public" (and any subfolders) is NOT displayed in the folder list, alphabetically ordered, on the left.
  3. Click the "Settings" icon in the top right.
  4. In the left most column of the "Settings" screen, click "Folders".
  5. The second column now displays a possible list of folders.
  6. Put a check mark next to the folders you wish to display in your mail folder list.
  7. When you click the check box, a message will briefly display on the bottom right saying "Folder successfully subscribed".
    1. You cannot select "Public" itself.
    2. Instead, select each individual subfolder.
  8. If you click the "Mail" icon at the top right of your screen, any "Public" folders to which you subscribed will now be in your list under "Public".

Outlook 2010

Outlook may be smart enough to simply find the Public folder. You may need to quit and restart Outlook for it to notice. If Outlook does not...

  1. Right click on the account name in the Mail list on the left (this will be your email address (at) cnf.cornell.edu)
  2. Choose "IMAP Folders"
  3. A dialog labeled "IMAP Folders" appears.
  4. In this dialog, in the top box labeled "Display folders whose names contain:", type in: Public
  5. Uncheck the box at the bottom labeled "When displaying hierarchy in Outlook, show only subscribed folders"
  6. Click the "Query" button
  7. The Public/Spam and Public/Ham folders appear in the results list.
  8. Select each folder and click "Subscribe".
  9. The folder name will now have a folder icon displayed to the left of the folder name.
  10. Click the "OK" button.
  11. If the "Public" folder still does not display, again right click on the account name at the top of your folder list and choose "Update Folder List"

Thunderbird

If Thunderbird does not automatically find the Public folder

  1. Right click the name of your account in the folder list.
  2. Choose "Subscribe"
  3. In the box that appears, you should see the Public folders.
  4. Select the subfolders under Public and click the "Subscribe" button.
  5. Click "OK"
  6. To refresh the folder list, collapse the account by clicking the downwards pointing arrow to the left of the account name in the folder list in the left pane.
  7. Now re-expand the account by clicking the now rightwards pointing arrow which is still located to the left of the account name.
  8. You will see your folders, including the Public folders.

Apple Mail

Apple Mail may simply find the Public subfolders. If "Public" does not appear in the list of mailboxes, on the left...

  1. Right click on any folder in the folder list (you have to right click on a folder and not the account name heading)
  2. Choose "Get Account Info"
  3. Click the "Subscription List" tab
  4. You will see the "Public" folder.
  5. Expand it to see the subfolders
  6. Check the boxes next to the subfolders, or highlight the folder name and click "Subscribe"
  7. Close the "Account Info" window by clicking the red X circle at the top left.
