Server Backup FAQ

How do I enable backups for my server?
For server customers, backups can be ordered directly through our control panel on your server dashboard. Once enabled backups are typically enabled on your machine within 24 hours with our initial presets. Refer to the preset directories in the question below for what will be backed up with our default policy.

To add or change backups just submit a ticket with details of what you want changed or backed up and we will make the changes as requested.

What is backed up by default?

The default policy backups the folders listed below
    C:\fx3
    C:\inetpub
C:\Coldfusionxx (changes depending on what version)
    E:\Web

This is basic setup for standard file backups. If there are specific directories you need backed , please let us know via a support ticket.
Please see your server dashboard for a live listing of actual backed up directories.

What about database backups?

If you have MSSQL, ORACLE or MySQL databases that need to be backed up, please let us know. These require either different version of the backup client and/or local scheduled scripts to pre-dump the data to be backed up.
This is especially true with MyQL db's as they require your root username/password for ongoing scheduled database dump files to occur.

If needed, we can provide these scripts and help with scheduling the tasks so they are correctly picked up by the backup system.

Is there an extra charge for database backups?

We do not currently charge extra for database backups.

What about Exchange Server Backups
Exchange Server backup requires a different backup client and does incur an additional charge. Please contact sales for up to date pricing on this option.

What about Full OS/ Server Image Backups
Server Image backups require a different client and does incur an additional charge. Please contact sales for up to date pricing on this option if you are interested.
In most cases, a Hot-Standby Server is a better option for this. See https://www.media3.net/cloud-servers/hot-standby.cfm for details.

What is the backup schedule? How often are my files backed up?

The default backup policy for most files is to backup 3 times per week on random days/times.   If you would like to have specific times/days or a different schedule, please let us know via a support ticket and we can make the desired changes.  If databases are being backed-up, the default schedule on those is typically daily.

How much disk space is included in my backups?
The base tier of backups includes up to 100 GB of storage. Since we utilize compression before storing backups, this is generally enough for the majority of customers. Addt'l space is sold in blocks of 100GB. We will contact you if you are close to exceeding your existing storage quota or if you would like to increase storage space, please contact sales for up to date pricing.

What is the retention policy?

Our default retention policy is to keep 3 copies/versions of each file.  This can be changed on request to either keep more then 3 copies or changed to time based retention.

Can I do file restores?

Yes you can choose exactly what you want restored, from specific files or directories to specific databases if those have been configured. Restores can be made to any machine you have under the same account, any specific location, or the original location. Although you are able to perform restores yourself, we do recommend that you allow us to do any restores necessary to avoid any potential data-loss.

How can I view the backups jobs that are setup?

The basic information can be found on your server dashboard within our control panel at https://support.media3.net.For a more detailed look or for actual backup/restore controls, you can log into your server and open the Media3/ixCloud interface under programs. Although you are able to control the backups yourself, we do recommend that you allow us to make any changes and to do any restores necessary.
