Problem Statement 1:
Using 3D modeling and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), improve the flow entry into a Trichoidal Gear Expander by changing the shape transition of the entry port. A Trichoidal Gear Expander is a gerotor used in an Organic Rankin Cycle system to convert waste heat into carbon free electricity. Maximizing the flow improves the overall efficiency of the system for improved heat to electricity conversion. The project will include learning the basic thermodynamic events occurring during fluid entry and can expand to include a large variety of scenarios to test for.
Problem Statement 2:
Thermodynamically model the expansion process of the fluid in a Trichoidal Gear Expander.  A Trichoidal Gear Expander is a gerotor used in an Organic Rankin Cycle system to convert waste heat into carbon free electricity. As the expander rotates, a fixed mass of fluid increases in volume. Modeling the expansion will provide insight into potential improvements for optimizing the expander design for more efficiency output.  This will also aid in overall system modeling that is used when interfacing with customers to obtain the most efficient system design. Based on the initial results the project can expand to include multiple scenarios or expand the model to the entire system, not just the expander.
