Task 2: Best Practices

Task Leader: Bill Shreve
Task Members: Ron Black, Jack Neafsey, Dave Welch, Mei-Wei Cheng
GOAL: To identify alumni experiences that are viewed as outstanding examples of productive interactions between companies and universities and to extract best practices relating to both large companies and start-ups in as many different markets as possible.

Timing: Preliminary report for ECC meeting on April 1

Desired material for inclusion in final report:

1. Document corporate-university relationships that have led to commercialization of significant technology and proven rewarding to those involved from both industry and the university.
a. Steps: Identify Council Members and alumni who can link us to company leaders most familiar with establishing and managing relationships with universities.
b. Contact those people and identify outstanding relationships
c. Explore what differentiates these relationships, and determine whether processes used can be replicated and form the basis for best practices.
2. As much as possible, determine the benefits that came from these relationships to the company and those engaged directly with the university, the benefits that accrued to the university and the faculty and students directly involved in the relationship, and the benefits that accrued to the community, state or country where the university was located.
