Crane group members can access their data using any of the 4 workstations, or from the Lancaster/ Crane cluster. Here's how that's done.

Workstation user: Storage summary
- Any of your data used on a group workstation is accessible to you if you later log into any of the four group workstations.
- Data placed in "notbackedup" is not backed up.
- Large amounts of data can be stored there and then the group does not pay for backing it up.
- Be careful not to put non-recoverable data there.
- Bottom line: Don't back up (and thus pay to backup) large amounts of restorable data.
- All other data, including data placed on your desktop, is backed up.
For Crane group's cluster users: Overview
- Research data would ideally be backed up. Reasonably enough the group does not want to pay to back up some large data.
- Rule of thumb: Back up data unless it's large AND restorable from elsewhere, such as the raw data.
- QUESTION: Can this data not to be backed up be reliably and uniquely defined by extension name or other characteristic?
- If so, can use exclusions within EZ-Backup to not back up this data instead of creating a dedicated directory to hold such data, for exclusion.
- Research data (whether backed up or not) should be available from any of the group's workstations and the cluster.
Question: Can data
From any of the 4 workstations
Log in using your NetID credentials.
- Anything you store within your home profile (including desktop) is not available from the cluster.
- It is backed up.
- And it's available from any of the workstations.
- Anything you store in "data" is available from the cluster.
- It is also backed up.
- Again, it's available from any of the workstations.
- Anything you store in "notbackedup" is also available from the cluster.
- It is NOT backed up.
- Again, it's available from any of the workstations.
From the Lancaster/ Crane cluster
Log in using your NetID and cluster account's password (NOT your NetID password).
- Anything you store within your home profile is not backed up and not available from any workstation.
- Anything you store in "data" is available. See above, under workstations, for more details.
- Anything you store in "notbackedup" is also available. See above, under workstations, for more details.
Matrix, for a visual representation of the Crane storage system
Research data type or location | Access | Is it backed up? | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
User's "data" directory | From any workstation or cluster. | Yes | Backups cost money so avoid using for large amounts of data unless necessary. |
User's "notbackedup" directory | From any workstation or cluster. | No | Use only if unexpected loss of data is acceptable. Usually will only pertain to large data amounts. |
User home profile data | Access | Is it backed up? | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
User's workstation home profile, including desktop | From any workstation. | Yes | Backups cost money so avoid using for large amounts of data unless necessary. |
User's workstation home profile (no desktop) | From cluster. | No | Crane can request we add EZ-Back up to the cluster and back up his group's profiles. |
