Overview

May 6, 2013: First time FTP services identified to Oliver (ChemIT) as needing to be moved from CCMR to somewhere else.

Status

Hi Oliver,

Yes, we had an anonymous ftp service via AFS. I didn’t remember that Freed group used it or linked to it from their web site.

The system was setup with two distinct directories in AFS for download and upload. One could put files in the download directory only via AFS and they could then be retrieved with anonymous FTP.

If there are links to such files in the web site, then the files are likely fairly static and old and should just be served via http now. Files for a limited audience or available only for a limited time should be provided with some other mechanism - probably sharing via box.net or Cornell dropbox depending on the details. Taking a look, the stuff looks like old code. It should probably be zipped or otherwise archived and served out via http. If it is maintained code, perhaps migrating to Cornell’s sourceforge server would be appropriate. I have heard of this but never used it.

We also had an anonymous ftp upload. Uploaded files could only be retrieved via AFS, but even the person or session that just uploaded the file could not download it via ftp. This doesn’t appear to have been used by Freed group, but if it was, there are other mechanisms for this nowadays.

Thanks,
-Barry.

Subject: ACERT's use of CCMRs FTP directory

Barry,

Can you please orient me to the FTP directory which Curt mentions, below? It’s the first I’m hearing of ACERT’s apparent dependence on an FTP service you are provisioning- doh! And what, if any, relationship does this FTP directory have with ACERT’s web server? (I mean, other than that their web site has links which point to this FTP service.)

If this directory isn’t part of the web server, is this a directory on your AFS server? If so, we obviously must ensure all these files are migrated to the CIFS (file sharing services) we’re setting up for ACERT, which we planned all ACERT’s researcher would access via file sharing mounts. I am surprised that I am only now hearing that they may need (public!) FTP access to files you are currently hosting. Seems we must confirm with the ACERT group the value and “fit” of FTP services in this day of web servers, Box.com, and file sharing.

What do you recommend I do, based on your understanding of the situation?

Your guidance is appreciated,   -Oliver.

Hi, Oliver,

It appears we still need to move the ftp files from CCMR to CIT, and will require some assistance in doing so (see DEP note, below).

Thanks,
Curt

Curt:

There's still one part of the website that's active on CCMR: the FTP page. The address is
 ftp://ftp.ccmr.cornell.edu/pub/freed

We'll need to move that and update links, then I think we can finish closing out the CCMR end.

Have a good one,
Dee.

Curt,

Jack last week asked me to confirm with you that the ACERT web site move is complete and was successful. If so, Jack says I can close the project.

Also, once you confirm the move's success, this will authorize CCMR to delete their data related to the ACERT web site.

If this project can be closed because you consider the migration successful, please let me and Jack know.

And obviously if you have any concerns which prevent you from confirming the migration's success, please let us know, too.

Thank you,     -Oliver.
