What's the arrow icon next to some databases for - you can see it if you go to the A-Z list, next to "All about birds"

2. user-92500

Also in A-Z list: look at Making of America. There is a broken link to some image icon there.

Hi Randi,

I was able to figure out why this was happening for "All about Birds" and
"Hoovers". This was left over from testing we did to make sure the image
icon would work (before we had the actual image). I'm a little more puzzled
by "Making of America" though, so Rick will be taking a look at that one.

Thanks!

This box appears after when searching, before returning results:

response from Rick Barr regarding this on 1/9/07:

This is simply an alert that was being used to test some fixes from yesterday. It is not an actual problem, but I have removed it from as many servers as I could. I dont have access to all of them at the moment, but hopefully it will be alleviated a bit now. The alert will be gone from all servers first thing in the morning.

Thanks,

4. Some image databases don't have the image icon next to it. See Databases by Subject: Images list.

Examples: Ancient art and architecture (Saskia), Breeds of Livestock, Fantastic in art and fiction, Farber gravestone, etc.

I am having trouble getting the "view" button to work. When I click on it, the screen flashes (as though there was a pop-up box, that's being bloked by the pop-up blocker, but my pop-up blocker is off. I'm not sure if this a problem with my computer or the system as a whole.

Not a developer comment - but here are some suggested additions to DBs in subject areas:
Agriculture - add Biosis, zoo record
Biology - add vivo (link-only; it appears in ag, so why not here?)
Environment and Natural Resources - add GeoRefs, biosis, CAB, agricola, zoo record

9. user-230c2

After a search has been completed, and you want to change from a keyword search to a subject search, and you use the drop down box in the right hand corner and change it to subject -- it returns it to keyword and replicates the search.

response from Kelli on 1/9/07:

Hi Randi,

The issue with the wrong databases being searched in the Article Quick
Search has been resolved in development. The change had been made last
week, but it wasn't getting updated to the page itself. I'll test first
thing tomorrow morning in production to make sure it is working correctly.

response from Kelli Smith 1/9/07:

Hi Randi,

The reason you're seeing those messages is because RLG Cultural Materials
and CAMIO are not working yet because the vendor has not added our IPs. I
changed both of these to link-only entries, but it looks like this
particular search type is still including them in the search. It might be
best to remove those two from the Images QS for now, so the users aren't
confused. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Kelli Smith

Search from Psychology dbs keyword dyslexia bring only 11 databases results - not 13. Where is Psych Articles and Sage Race Relations? They do not show up in the listing

15. As I was looking for the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art images under the Images link, it took several tries to find it, even though I know it is there.

First of all, the name has changed to Johnson Museum of Art from Herbert F. Johnson Museum, and things are listed in alphabetical order rather than by category such as 'art databases'. So I could not find it under 'H' even though we always refer to this as the HFJ collection for those of us who work on it. There was no way to just find 'Art databases' once I am in the Images page. I tried entering Herbert F. Johnson Museum in the serach box, but since it is unchecked got junk results. I think that it would be wise to offer a key for people when there is more than one folksonomic way to reference a collection.

Secondly, the spacing between the rows in the Select/Deselect table is so uneven, that my eye went over it several times before being able to read the name alphabetically under Japanese historical maps. I strongly recommend making the row height of the table such that there is space above and below each entry in the table, and that it is even. My eye was thrown off by the lack of space between Japanese historical maps and Johnson Art Museum.

Another visually distracting thing is the uneven use of upper and lower case in the list. While it is true that some of the names are proper names of collections, and others simply descriptors, it is a detractor when one is scanning a table with so many entries (and probably not important to the searchers). Maybe the best would be to make everything upper/lower case, even if it is not that way in the actual library record.

Thanks,

Gale Halpern

When I search up something that takes me to ISI WoK -
"Web of Science: Science Citation Index Expanded"
and I do a view, of the record,

and in ISI Wok, I mark some references, and then try to "send to reference
software", I get this:

ISI Web of Knowledge - Transforming Research ISI Web of Knowledge.
You do not have a session.

You will need to establish a new session if you wish to continue.

but when I try to establish a new session, by following the button on this page,
I get the search page, which is still proxied thru web feat, and when I do a search,
I get the results page, and I mark the references, I get this message AGAIN.

So, as long as I am going thru wf2la7.webfeat.org to do searches, or view a record,
from, the POV of ISI WOK, I don't have a session, and I cannot export to RefWork/EndNote
or any other reference software FROM within the window controlled by WebFeat.

17. user-c8932

I am also getting the error box Gail reports above. Clicking through doesn't seem to have any negative effect.

Are the results supposed to be de-duped? I am seeing multiple hits for the same article. Also, for one search, I retrieved catalog records even though I did not check the box for the catalog.

The searching does seem to be fast, but a full-load test needs to be done to check that.

Thanks,

David

I want to add to my previous comment, that none of
the buttons:
Print, E-Mail, Save, Export to Reference Software, Save to My EndNote Web work
from within the Full Record view of Web of Science.

Reproduce:
Search for SemanticEye: a semantic web application
within the 'Group' Science and Technology.
Eventually, the '
ISI web of knowledge Web of Knowledge ' DB comes up.

(the second one looks oddly mangled -
how can the author be:
Casher, O, AuthorCasherOmerCasher, Omer, Rzepa, HS, et al.?)

Pick the first of the 2 records, and view.
'Export to Reference Software',
and you get:
ISI Web of Knowledge - Transforming Research ISI Web of Knowledge.
You do not have a session.

You will need to establish a new session if you wish to continue.

1. I think that the
button that does search should always say search:
on the 'Quick Search page' I guess one searches by clicking 'Go'.
2. I searched on 'images from 6 general ...' using 'eyes'
and after 5 minutes, I still had not gotten ANY results from any of the data bases.
3. when you select a set, I think the page that shows
your progress should have an indication of what set is in
progress'. Somewhere on the Results, and 'Retrieving Results'
list should be named, the same way you selected it on the Quick Search page.
4. the Results page title should be meaningful: not just "RESULTS" - but containing
the search used, name of search set, and Cornell University LIBRARY
For instance:
Search for 'eyes' / 6 image databases / Cornell University.
20. I got the error box Gail mentioned each time I searched. Also, when I searched "raphael" and selected "images from 6 general image databases," two databases didn't work. I received the message:

Exporting reference problems:

When I search:
Ethnic news watch
for
'immolation'
one of the records returned is:
YOU ARE NOT HERE
Autor: Sara Blumenthal
Journal: Mandala ( Taos )
Datil: 2006-07
Issue: 27
Página: 38 (1 pages)

When I export that to EndNote:
I get this record:

TY - GEN
AU - Sara, Blumenthal
TI - YOU ARE NOT HERE
SP - 38 (1 pages)
N1 - YOU ARE NOT HERE
N1 - Mandala ( Taos)

The problem is that the title of the Journal is
Mandala (Taos). should have been the J1 tag.
and the issue, nor the date are included.

If I export the record as text, the info is all there.

1. while resources are being searched, I would like some idea how near done
we are. Something like "Results from 4 of 12" databases.
2. If you are fetching Results, call them Results, or "Number of Articles", or "Number of
Results", not "Hits".
3. Please provide a button that 'Clears all' on the page. If you select a few articles
from various databases, and then try to unselect them you have to do it one db at a time. If the page is several hundred articles long, and includes a large of databases, it is hard to find all the databases to unselect each database one at a time.

Did a search in quick search - checked both 4 general databases and the library catalog. Keyword: ernest hemmingway.

Was surprised that only 2 results came back from the CUL catalog - one from the Icelandic collection one microform.

Comment from Nan Hyland:

I'm not sure if this is feedback coming along too far into the process but I think it would be great if the "or locate database" function could be separated out in maybe a search box to the right if the "find it" search box. Lots of people are used to doing finding databases this way. The new system introduces another click for this long-running function and I've found patrons really hate when an extra click is introduced into an established routine.

Also, it is unclear to me that you can select databases from the browse-able list below the search box. I think before they had a box to check so I could select say "history" and then run a search in all the history databases without having to open up the list.

I realize that all of this may have been considered and changed to the way it is now because of usability testing etc.

Just my 2cents...

Did a database search for the keyword War. From these results, did a search within the selected resources using the keyword vietnam war. These were the results from WebFeat. Once you have chosen a specific subject area to search - there should be some note of which database selection you chose someplace on the right hand side near the Results by Resource. I did a search, left for a while, came back and could not figure out which subject area I had searched. I had to go back and match up the resources to figure it out. (turns out it was social sciences- geography, maps and spatial data!)

More on references:
I think all the saved citations references should include an element of some sort
a note, or part of AB, or something, that gives either

1. the name of the database that the record comes from
2. or the URL of the database the data comes from

Once you start including things like works of art, inscriptions, photographs,
the reference functions don't work very well, so the user may need to
return to the database to get more complete information. But in many
cases the information is so sketchy that the user, given only a reference in
their RefWorks, or other citation database, may not be able to understand from
where the reference came.

39. user-b18aa

When I do a search in the catalog, and try to go
to the "Next Set", I always get

Your search is expired. Please re-execute your search

on the next screen, so I am not able to see more than the
first 20 of any catalog result set.

40. I was unable to get consistent results from Factiva--they either came up with zero results for a search that should have returned thousands or they didn't show at all in the results screen (I don't know if the Factiva problem is because of simultaneous user limits or because the intro page is currently the "News Stand" and not the article search).

Mergent and Science Direct also have yet to appear on the results screen at all for any of my searches.

On a minor note, the Quick Search box kinda throws me. I don't know if it is just me or maybe it is just because I had gotten used to the old FA, but I took me a little while to figure out where I wanted to search (which was the Select A Subject Area To Search). I think many folks might just enter some search terms in the Quick Search box without checking one of the boxes below and get stuck in the endless loop that Mary Ochs discovered earlier.

41. user-b18aa

The Screen: Save Results: has a line that
says:

Number of records to be saved:

But it never says how many records will be saved. If you don't want to tell me,
then don't tease me.

42. This is such a giant leap forward – great work, WebFeat team! The thumbnail results on image searches are really useful and compelling, and the interface is very intuitive.

I'm still experiencing significant lag times in when WebFeat is retrieving results in Luna collections. When I search both the A. D. White Architectural Photos Collection and ArtStor, I do not get the ADW results within the ArtStor results. The A. D. White Collection should be a stand-alone collection AND part of ArtStor. I suppose that's a matter of which metadata WebFeat is searching in ArtStor. Another, more significant Luna problem occurs when I try to search the RMC Images collection from WebFeat. I have tried a number of keyword searches (searches that have yielded results in the native interface) and WebFeat has yet to return any results. One example is searching for the keyword ezra. Any idea why it's not returning results on any searches?

Finally, the note at the bottom of the search results page is intriguing – "This page last changed 37 years ago."

43. user-b18aa

1. "Next Set" gives odd results, different for different databases, but never (well, hardly ever) works.

Maybe this is a function of being on the test server?

I searched "ischemic myocardium"
in the Science and Technology group.

Databases that return more than 1 set give odd results when
paging to the "Next Set". BioMed Central says this:

Your search is expired. Please re-execute your search

Including:
BioMed Central.

But when selecting "Next Set" for PubMed Central we seem only show some of the databases, not including PubMed Central, PubMed appears

when I tried this same search in the "General Information" category,
and tried to Next Set from Factiva, I got this screen - where only a fraction of
the databases are displayed in the TOC, and none of the data.
See this image:

44. I don't think that this is really a problem, but I figured I mention it. I clicked the view button to take a look at a result from Books24x7 and was immediately brought into the database and to the full text of the book. Normally, when I try to access Books24x7 via the catalog, I have to log in with my netid and password. Anyone know why this is?

Tested yesterday (1/9/07) : problems with MLA bibliography db not working, a large number of databases in categories showed up as needing technical assistance, and the largest problem was there were very long lag times - one time the wait time was so long she exited the session and began again.

Book history online*

China academic journals*

Eighteenth century collections online*

FRANCIS*

Hapi online*

On occasion - when I click the Databases or articles tab in Find it! I'm taken to the main Find it! page with no options checked. If I click either of those again, then it gets checked. Any reason why this wouldn't always work on the first try?

48. Based on outside discussion about the presentation of images on the Library Gateway, the lack of compatibility between Luna and Webfeat, and the amount of material which exists in Luna, I think that the databases which required 'Direct search' be removed from the Webfeat list, and given icons which allow direct search outside of the list. As it appears currently, these direct search collections have been relegated to a kind of 'second-class' status, even though the content may be very relevant to the end user.

ummm, since when did "Books" become one of our subject categories? It just appeared in the last few minutes....

A few comments from Mann reference meeting:

• there should be a link to the advanced search from somewhere on the main find it page
• date range selection option is still appearing when you select advanced search from any subject area search page
• please please put a link to what DBs are being searched in the quick search. It could work like this: on the quick search, the text "4 general databases" could be link to a list of the DBs displayed as if they were one of the subject groupings (this makes the database descriptions easily accessible)

Randi,

Thank you for the clarification. I had not actually added this
functionality to your pages, but it does appear that we're now using it as a
standard in our .JS files. However, I see that dev is working correctly,
while wfsearch is not. I am going to ask about this and see if there is
some core functionality we need to move over to the other servers. I will
let you know what I find out.

Comments from Peter C.:

• Where is an advanced search option?
• If a patron puts keywords/phrases in the quick search box and does NOT chose anything, it just loopes and doesn't search. It should state clearly "must choose one or more boxes."
• If the back button does not work (as it does not in IE browser) then the words "Back to Quick Search" should be larger and more prominent.
• What does the pull down menu of "user selected resources" do? When I tried to change it to another area, it did not work.
• The databases selection on quick search section is somewhat misleading. When I put in the keywords "agriculture ancient egypt" this there are no results, only 2 search boxes:

When you search keywords "Shakespeare tempest" using the MLA bibliography and the Literature Resource Center, you get 1398 results from MLA, around 700 from LRC. When you want to look at the results, and you hit next set, it allows you to look at 11-20 of the results. When you want to look at more, you hit next step, but it doesn't do anything. This was verified twice. Also, when you decide to "relevancy rank" the results (instead of grouping them which is the defult) it brings up 20 results and NO more. Where are the the other results? What happened to them?

From Nancy Skipper:

This might not be relevant when the system is fully implemented, but, just
in case it is helpful:
Am testing the test system from home.
When I click on the Find Articles tab, the Find Articles box is not
automatically checked. Same with Find databases.
When I click on a tab for a non-WebFeat resource, e.g. Find Images or Find
e-Journals, then I go back and click on Find Articles or Find Databases, I
am taken out of the WebFeat test system into our current system.

In testing search results in AnthroPlus and Sociological Abstracts:
Once I "view" a record, the browser (I.E.) "back" button doesn't work. I
see that you can navigate back to the search results by hunting along the
task bar. Not a show stopper, but perhaps there could be a more
user-friendly navigation in the future.

From Nicole Margirier:

Notes about Quick Search Trial in Webfeat.

Quick Search -- No Selection

A => At first, I tried to search for a keyword without selecting any options from the Quick Search: Quick search Include: articles from 4 general databasesimages from 6 general image databasesbooks, etc. - in Library CatalogOr locate: databasesThis search apparently never happened. Computer kept on searching for quite a long time (I actually was away from my desk and came back, and it was still acting as if it were searching). It never came up saying "you must first check an option" or "Search cannot proceed, please go back and select an option."

Also, I could not use the BACK ( <= ) arrow to get back to the original search screen to correct my search.

Quick Search -- Selected Articles from 4 General Databases

B => I decided to do the "Maureen search" for Zombie, as a quick search through Articles from 4 General Databases, and got many results. When I sorted the results, all sorting seemed to work properly, but when sorting by Author, it mixes the first name and last name. When the original citation has a comma separating the last and first name, as in "Cohen, Peter" (see result 11 below) the author was sorted properly. 1. WEEKENDER: movies. 1Author: Alicia A. Quick Search -- Selected Images from 6 Image Databases

D => Quick Search for Images. Using the result summary below, the 2 Artstor images appeared next to the citation. American Memory did not show anything, just the citation, and AccuNet/AP... showed a box with "X image" written where the image might be. It may be that each database will show the results differently. Also, it could depend on the type of image available (.jpeg, .gif, etc.). Seeing the actual image is quite nice, and helps with the search. 0 NYPL digital2 Artstor2 American memory44 AccuNet/AP multimedia archiveCatalog of art museum images online (CAMIO) RLG cultural materials *------------------------------------------------*Technical support contactedAlso, in this search, I wanted to see if ALL result from AccNet/AP... were showing the same "X image" instead of the image, and when I clicked on the *Next Set box at the bottom of the search, it took a long time to get the page 2 of the results (meanwhile, it showed the same message "Retrieving Results" that appears during the original search. More problematic, when I clicked Next Set box, to see the third page of results, it searched for a while, as mentioned above for the second page, but came up with the page showing "No Results."

I then searched again for articles in the 4 databases to test the reaction to Next Set. I was able to flip through all pages, up to the last article.

I then went back to the Image search and recreated the search (D). I got the same list of results shown above, and click onNext Set. As happened previously, the 2nd page of results appeared as expected (lengthy wait "Retrieving results"). However, when I selected Next Set to view the 3rd page, here is what it showed:

I checked a few pages of these. They did not seem related to the original search (appeared to be currrent general news articles). However, the next pages checked all seemed to be part of this NEW search with2626496 results. I re-created this search a second time to be sure, and got the same weird list starting on the 3rd page of Image Search.Quick Search -- Books, etc. from Library Catalog

E => Search for Zombie in books etc.. Got 32 results from the catalog, which matched a keyword search in the catalog. Next Set worked fine.

I also search for the keywords Film Korean under the same section (Books, etc. in catalog) and got the same results I would get from the catalog. I was able to flip through many pages (up to 10 -- did not test all of them) without problems.

QUESTION:

When searching the CU Library Catalog, Could it be possible to include basic Set Limits options. People often want to find book, audio and video recordings in specific language. So having the language and possibly the date limits in the original search option could be a plus.

TEST SEARCH FOR ARTICLES USING THE LIST OF DATABASES

F => The search seemed to work fine. I could easily flip through all the pages of results without a problem. However, when I clicked on GetIt! Cornell, there is the sense that I will actually get the Full Text (see screen below). When I click on Business source premier to get the link to the article as mentioned, the screen asks verification of the search (Had to write the article title, and author). Then, when I clicked SUMBIT, it took me back to the verification screen.

If I select SourceOECD (journal link), it takes me to the publication, but I have to search the table of contents because the results I got from the original search did not tell me the article page number.

Clicking on Search by Title, takes me to the CU catalog, and I can proceed from there (although I do not have a quick way of knowing the page number).

61. Diacritics are displaying incorrectly in the search results. In fact, the appearance of a diacritic seems to knock out multiple characters: "Müller" displays as "M?"; "Hörnigk" displays as "H?gk".

62. As Virginia already pointed out, there is a problem with the upper-right search box on the results page. As long as I stick with "user selected resources" (i.e., the selection I checked on the Find-it front page), I am able to get valid results with new search terms -- but when I choose another category from the pull-down menu, the search button no longer does anything.

Also, the pull-down for search fields only contains one option ("keyword").

Exporting one record

From some more testing it seems like, if I can narrow down a search so it gives
exactly one result and I mark that reference, I cannot export that.
According to the error console of
firefox (2.0), this is the error:
Error: reference to undefined property "temptest"

Line: 91
this seems to correspond to the IE error given above.

1. user-b18aa

and from looking at the javascript temptest is misspelled.
it should be tempTest

// General function to initiate the citation export process

65. Two more comments from Wednesday's Mann Reference meeting:

1. Some databases are labeled as images even though they're not - for example, BioMed Central.

to return to the original set of results, there is currently no way (that I

can see) to return to your original search without having WF re-run the search again.

The emailed results from Hive and Honey Bee were incomplete citations. And the date and time of the email are wrong, I did it yesterday evening.

68. The EIU databases are direct access only which makes sense because they don't function well with WF. The thing is that they are listed in the A-Z list, but not in any subject list such as business or economics while other databases that are direct access are listed (sans checkbox of course).

Can we add EIU to these two subject lists?

69. user-92500

Is WF truncating? When I try a search for dada (or dadaism) in the Arts and Humanities - Linguistics, Language and Literature DBs, I get all kinds of results that do not include dada anywhere. Also, I get only 1 result when I search dadaism Anthropology Plus natively, and 25 in Webfeat.

70. user-92500

In the pull-down box for advanced searching - there is a selectable, blank line. Why not just make the defualt be "all". You can actually search without making a selection and get some results, but this is pretty weird.

71. user-b8a33

Resort option by "hits" for your results starts with ascending - so you get all the zero hits first, if we can reset that to start with descending it would be better.

Also - could be my browser (IE) but only the 'e-journals' tab shows as active when selected.

72. Hi-Ed Z and I noticed from the following search that we get this error:

resolver.library.cornell.edu/NET/openurl?genre=article&issn=03624331&title=new+york+times&volume=156&issue=53818&date=20070108&atitle=tony+blair+to+be+held+to+account+onstage.&spage=b1&pages=&sid=ebsco:aph&aulast=riding/ is not supported

Quick Search: Tony Blair , searching in the 4 databases section

If you go to the Ebscohost results, and then click on "view" for this article(which is result number one in the ebscohost section):

Setting Choices, Controlling Outcomes: The Operation of Prime Ministerial Influence and The UK's Decision to Invade Iraq.
Author: O'Malley, Eoin
Journal: British Journal of Politics & International Relations

you are directed to a citation, with a Get it! link to take you to blackwell for full text. The problem is that the get it link from the ebsco via webfeat page has the wrong openURL resolver address: http://resolver.library.cornell.edu/resolver/NET/purl.cgi/openurl?genre=article&issn=03624331&title=New+York+Times&volume=156&issue=53818&date=20070108&atitle=Tony+Blair+To+Be+Held+To+Account+Onstage.&spage=B1&pages=&sid=EBSCO:aph&aulast=Riding

The correct resolver address for webbridge is:

<http://resolver.library.cornell.edu/net/openurl/?>

I tested the same citation searching directly in Academic Search Premier, and the get it! link worked correctly from there. http://linkresolver.library.cornell.edu:4550/resserv/?genre=article&issn=13691481&title=british+journal+of+politics+%26+international+relations&volume=9&issue=1&date=20070201&atitle=setting+choices%2c+controlling+outcomes%3a+the+operation+of+prime+ministerial+influence+and+the+uk\'s+decision+to+invade+iraq.&spage=1&pages=1-19&sid=ebsco:aph&aulast=o\'malley/

The same problem happened with the other 2 or 3 I tested from the same results list for the ebsco databases.

73. Hi all, a few quick things (looks great BTW)-

1- Beilstein Crossfire is missing from the Chemistry section, this was in the just previous version of Find Databases and should be listed here. It would be a direct access only database like SciFinder Scholar.

2- ADS (Astrophysics Data System) is missing from the Physics section. This was added back into Find Databases after the big purge and it is discouraging to see it gone again. It is the major literature database for Astronomy and although it is freely available from NASA/Harvard it is an essential resource for our patrons. It would be like removing arXiv or Pubmed from the database listings.

2- The Inspec link in the Physics section is actually the link to Compendex. The two databases use the same interface and you can choose databases when you get there, but it would make for less confusion for patrons to be linked directly to the INSPEC search if they choose INSPEC from our page, instead of launching directly into a Compendex search, which would probably bring an element of serendipity to their searching, but would not cover the same subjects.

3- Are the Find "Articles" and Find "Databases" tabs going to remain on the gateway pages? If so, would it be possible to consider if one clicks on the Find "Databases" tab that when the WebFeat page opens the box next to databases is checked? The patron might miss this otherwise.

Thanks!

1. Oops, my apologies on the first #2 above. ADS is listed, but as "NASA astrophysics data system". Would it be possible to prefix this title with ADS since this is what it is known as in the Astronomy community.

Also wondering if there will be any possible chances in future for subject librarians to comment on what is listed under the sections. There are some things in the Chemistry section that while considered science, are not as related to chemistry per se as some other resources that I see listed in other sections. Can I give a list of what should be included?

Thanks!

Leah

74. user-ad88e

1. The link from WebFeat to INSPEC takes one to COMPENDEX. The link is correct in the library catalog.

2. Could you add ADS to the NASA Astrophysical Data System? Most folks refer to it as simply ADS, and it is the primary database for astronomy. They will be announcing a bunch of new features soon.

Thanks,

Pat

Comments from the WebFeat meeting 1/17/07 9:30-10:30 in Olin 106.

1. Will there be a link to patrons to the public wiki page which explains what is being searched in 4 general databases?
2. When you do a search in 4 general databases, and then go to "next set" of results - it shows the other three that you are not looking at as a "search failed." Why?
3. Is there still a problem searching the First Search databases?
4. As a user - I am unclear what the quick search box is for. Can I put in an author, an article title oir is it only for keywords?
5. Does the link to help provide information and limitations on federated searches?
6. What is "locate database?" Many felt is needed further explaination and perhaps an example. One suggested including text that says "located database by database title & subject. Perhaps move located databases to another spot in the quick search area.
7. Suggested to move the tabs on top. Put articles near the tab for images, as these are both content bases and move eJournals and databases together.
8. Who will be the contact person from Cornell to WebFeat as this service is being provided 24/7. Who will contact WebFeat if there is a problem late at night or on the weekends?
9. What are the expectations for system load and stress testing once the students return?
10. Many had a problem with the terminology "4 general databases." Most wanted to know what 4 databases were being searched. Should the words be changed to collections instead of databases? Everyone liked the idea of a link or mouseover to explain what the databases are.
11. What happened to the link in the subject area of "Greatest Hits?"
12. It was suggested to break up the sub-groups of the subject areas to "top databases" and "all databases"
13. Is there a link or a way to refine one's search? Often the results are too great, and it would be helpful to have a way to limit and refine.
76. There was a question in Tuesday's training session about what WebFeat is searching in Lexis Nexis. Here's the scoop from Kelli:

We are using the "Quick News Search", and the date range is set to the previous six months. The reason we don't use the "Guided News Search" is because there are too many options that need to be set in order to search. We wouldn't be able to search all the news categories and news sources at once if we mapped to this one.

- Nate

77. I'm testing from home. I cleared my Firefox cache and cookies and rebooted before starting my test. (smile)

In Databases I searched for BIOSIS. I then wanted to search within the Selected Database. I typed in feline and selected BIOSIS, and the search ran forever (minutes) and then I quit it. Same in IE. I thought BIOSIS might be down, so I found it in Databases again and clicked on the link to BIOSIS. I got into BIOSIS Previews, but the header said ISI Web of Knowledge?! (What happened to Ovid/WebSPIRS???) The ezproxy URL ended with http://isiknowledge.com/biosis.

There was also a link to BIOSIS Previews. The URL looked like this: http://resolver.library.cornell.edu.proxy.library.cornell.edu:2048/misc/4132494 and took me to WebSPIRS.

In the ISI BIOSIS I was able to do a search for "feline" and came up with a large number of appropriate hits. I then went to the OPAC, got into WebSPIRS BIOSIS, and did the same search. At least the first bunch of results match. Anyway - BIOSIS wasn't down, but via WebFeat my search never did complete, and I thought it was odd to get into an ISI version of BIOSIS.

I have a screenshot I can send if someone wants to see it - I'm not sure right now how to paste it in here.

78. Nancy Skipper mentioned further up in these comments that when she's at home and clicks on the Databases tab, or the Articles tab, or whatever, there's no check mark. I'm seeing the same thing (in both Firefox and IE). It DOES work OK on campus.

79. From home still... Did a Quick Search in Databases for biology. Came up with a list, selected a few databases, and searched for feline. Got a bunch of hits. Then I wanted to go back to my list of biology databases and select another one. If I hit the Back button I get back to the generic Database screen, not the list of biology databases. Same behavior in Firefox 2 and IE 7. I'm PRETTY SURE I was able to get back to my list ON CAMPUS.

80. Now this might go in the "maybe it's me" file... But I ran into this the other night and can repeat it tonight, even after clearing my cache. I'm using Firefox 2.

Did a search in Articles (the four general databases) for "cat litter." I got some results from Lexis-Nexis and ISI. I choose a record and click View, and I get the article or abstract in a new window. I want to go back to my list, but instead of moving back to the originating browser screen I click the back arrow in the new window. That window is now blank. I click the forward arrow to get back to my article, and here's an excerpt of what I get (and having studied Chinese a while ago I can say that what's written does not make any sense):

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????????????????

This happens with both a Lexis-Nexis record and an ISI Web of Science record.

1. P.S. The above should display as Chinese/Korean, not as question marks. ALSO - I couldn't repeat this on campus.

81. I'm getting strange results when I search do an image search in the Kheel Center collection. The thumbnail icon seems to be the correct width, but the height is way too large, producing a distorted thumbnail and taking up a lot of space.

Searching Find DB for ulrichs or ulrich's gets ZERO results??!

83. user-92500

When we have access to more than one version of a database, can we please include the vendor name in the name? For example, a search for "biosis" in find databases gives 2 results:
biosis
biosis previews

It would be great to know which is ISI and which is Ovid.

84. user-230c2

searching American Memory for Icelandic sea boat via WebFeat returns 5,000 results. Doing it directly via the native interface produces 10. Could you please check and correct?

I think there may be a problem with how this connector is handling phrase searches. Searching just "Icelandic" produced much more reasonable results so I am having a developer take a look at this one.
>Thanks! Kelli Smith

1/23/07American Memory has been fixed and should be working correctly in production
now. Please let me know if you continue to see any problems.

Thanks!

Kelli Smith

85. A search for Biosis only is bringing up the ISI version, not Webspirs.

Can't we have both?

THanks, Jim

86. Still having some issues with how Biosis appears in WF. Are both flavors supposed to be available? Both are sort of half available.

On the A-Z list, ONLY Biosis previews appears. If it belongs in WF, it should probably say that it is Biosis (Ovid) or Biosis (WebSPIRS), whichever is the proper designation.

In categories biology, environment: only Biosis (ISI) appears.

In a search, the only result for Biosis is Biosis (ISI).

1. A PS, in the catalog, Biosis from ISI is actually listed as Biosis previews, while Biosis from WebSPIRS is simply Biosis. Pretty confusing...

87. user-92500

There is no description for Biosis-ISI

88. There are 2 links to zoo record in the a-z list of databases. The active one is two WebSPIRS zoo record, and it's available for federated searching. The other link is completely inactive - not available for federated searching, not available as link only. Can someone clear that up - which version(s) of zoo record is supposed to be searchable, and making both accessible via link. THanks - Gail

I would like to pass on some comments from a user today at the reference desk.

1) I know that the functionality of exporting to Refworks was being restored --any idea when that will be completed? (the patron wanted to import into refworks). If the fix will be finished soon, she might wait until she can export directly in. She has asked that I post that question here and if you have an answer for her, please let her know via e-mail at smbl13@cornell.edu

2) Could we/ or will we be adding a way of saving your custom list of databases? I didn't see an option to save a customized list and it seemed like that would be a nice feature rather than always having to scroll through the huge alphabetical list checking boxes as you go.

3) I continually run into the following problem: once in the list of databases, I check the databases I want. After I've spent several minutes selecting them I realize I will want to break apart my search terms, which you cannot do in the quicksearch interface. When you click on advanced search you can then break the terms apart, but you lose all the databases you have selected. This is quite frustrating, and even through I know about this problem and try to remember to be aware of it, I still often make this mistake. Could we either have it remember the checked databases when you switch from quick search to advanced or else make the user pick "quick search" or "advanced" up front at the beginning before you have the option of selecting the boxes? Once I see all those boxes, I just go straight to checking them off...
