Nontyphoidal Salmonella spp. is a Gram-negative zoonotic foodborne pathogen1 that can cause severe foodborne disease. A publication by Scallan et al.2 in 2011 estimated that 1,027,561 human foodborne Salmonellosis cases, including 378 deaths, occur annually in the US. It has been estimated that worldwide 93.8 million gastroenteritis cases are caused by nontyphoidal Salmonella, and 155,000 deaths each year3.
