How can working with Chemistry IT benefit you and your group? What services are free and which are fee-based?

All Chemistry groups must utilize and support these Chemistry IT-mediated services and processes:

  • Hardware inventory maintenance process. Includes all university (group) computers, tablets, and printers. And any non-wireless networked device.
    • Includes any wired network device's MAC addresses, whether used or not.
    • Secure disposal and recycling of computing equipment, including monitors.
  • Process all network jack activations. Includes Chemistry IT-managed network, CIT's AccessNet, and Chemistry's RedNet.
  • Maintain Cornell's Active Directory information for all Chemistry groups.
  • Processing all CIT SFS (file shares: CIFS and NFS) service requests. Uses Cornell's Active Directory.
  • Process all Sponsored NetID requests.
  • Process all Guest ID requests.
  • Coordinate with CIT all services related to Cornell phones, phone number changes, phone jack needs, and AUDIX services.
  • (Groups to keep Chemistry IT informed of IT security issues they are facing for which Chemistry IT is not managing?)
Group managing system, and thus networkBenefits to research groupLimitationsGroup obligations

Chemistry IT managing a system, on Chemistry IT's network.

  • Only available to Opt-in groups.
    • Default option for those Opt-in groups.

Efficient process for most systems means quicker turn-around and support.

  • NetID-based log-ons or group-user logon (AD-based)
  • Some network protocols are not supported via initiated-in-bound, such as <ssh> and server protocols (web server, ftp server, etc.).
  • Instrument computers are single-purpose and not with a public IP.
  • Report problems.
  • Respond to options on proposed fixes.

Group managing a system, on RedRover (CIT), AccessNet (CIT), or RedNet (A&S).

  • Only option to opt-out groups.
  • An option, per computer, for Opt-in groups.

No limitation on how computer is configured or used, as long as University policies are observed.

Any input from Chemistry IT will be inefficient since each system likely very different from each other across groups.

  • Chemistry IT cannot helped (unless hourly paid?)
  • Will require group members' time and effort for even basic installs.
Follow university policies, including following best practices.

Groups may elect not to use these Chemistry IT services, all of which are free to Opt-in groups:
